How to Choose the Right Safari Lodge in Tanzania

Tanzania offers the widest range of safari accommodation in East Africa — from ultra-luxury private reserves with zero other vehicles to well-priced mid-range lodges that deliver the full northern circuit experience without five-star pricing. Choosing correctly depends on three things: your destination, your season, and your travel style.

Every property on this page has been personally inspected or vetted by our team in Arusha. We do not list lodges we have not assessed — and we will tell you honestly when a property's photography flatters it more than the reality does. This library is updated continuously as standards change.

All properties shown are mid-range or luxury only. We do not include budget camps, group joining safaris, or properties that do not meet our standard for private safari clients.

Luxury (5-Star)

Butler service, private pools, fine dining, exclusive wildlife areas. Properties like Four Seasons Serengeti, Singita Grumeti, andBeyond, and Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. From $800–$2,500+ per person per night, all-inclusive.

Mid-Range (3–4 Star)

Genuine safari experience with comfortable rooms, full-board meals, reliable service. Properties like Serengeti Serena, Ngorongoro Serena, Kirurumu. From $350–$650 per person per night, most meals included.

Where to Stay in Each Location

Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous park and demands at least 3 nights. Central Serengeti lodges like Four Seasons and Serengeti Serena offer year-round wildlife. Northern Serengeti (Mara Explorer, Nomad) is essential July–October for river crossings. Eastern Serengeti (Namiri Plains) offers the best cheetah in Africa. Western Serengeti (Singita Grumeti) is a private reserve with zero shared drives. The Serengeti's best luxury camps book up 12+ months in advance for peak migration season.

Best luxury: Four Seasons · Singita · Nomad Best mid-range: Serengeti Serena Best for crossings: Mara Explorer

Ngorongoro Crater

All Ngorongoro lodges sit on the crater rim, 600 metres above the caldera floor. You descend by vehicle each morning and return by evening — no overnight camping inside the crater. The rim road has several excellent properties. Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and andBeyond are the top two luxury choices, both with butler service and crater-edge views. Ngorongoro Serena is built into the crater wall itself and offers excellent value. The rim is cool and misty year-round — bring a warm layer.

Best luxury: Crater Lodge · andBeyond Best mid-range: Serena · Highlands Season: Year-round

Tarangire National Park

Tarangire is best visited June–October when elephant herds of 300+ congregate around the river — the largest concentration of elephants in Tanzania. Tarangire Treetops is one of Africa's most extraordinary accommodation concepts — sleeping inside a 1,000-year-old baobab. Oliver's Camp and Swala Camp both offer exceptional walking safaris on private concessions. Tarangire Safari Lodge is the established mid-range option with excellent river valley views.

Best luxury: Treetops · Oliver's · Swala Best mid-range: Tarangire Safari Lodge Best season: Jun–Oct

Zanzibar Beach

Most Tanzania safaris extend to Zanzibar for beach recovery. The north coast (Nungwi, Kendwa) offers the best swimming — no tidal complications at the north tip. Essque Zalu and Zuri Zanzibar are the north coast's top choices. The northeast coast (Matemwe) is best for diving at Mnemba Atoll. The east coast (Spice Island) is reef-protected, ideal for families. Stone Town (Zanzibar Serena Inn) offers UNESCO cultural immersion. Zanzibar is accessible by 45-minute flight from any Serengeti airstrip.

Best luxury: Kilindi · Essque Zalu · Matemwe Best mid-range: Spice Island Best for diving: Matemwe Lodge

Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara is typically a half-day or full-day park visit rather than an overnight stop — but two properties justify staying. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge by andBeyond is one of Africa's great treehouse experiences — ten suites in the forest canopy with elephants beneath your deck. Chem Chem Lodge on the private reserve between Manyara and Tarangire offers night drives and bush walks unavailable in the national parks. Manyara is famous for tree-climbing lions, flamingo on the lake, and the dramatic rift valley escarpment backdrop.

Kilimanjaro & Arusha

Every Tanzania safari starts and ends in Arusha. Arusha Coffee Lodge is the definitive luxury gateway — a working coffee estate with award-winning cuisine and 5 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport. For Kilimanjaro climbers, Kibo Palace Hotel in Moshi handles pre-dawn trek departures seamlessly. Hatari Lodge at Arusha National Park is an extraordinary film-history property with Mount Meru panoramas and resident giraffe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tanzania Safari Lodges — Your Questions Answered

The Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti is widely considered the most spectacular luxury lodge in the Serengeti — built around a natural waterhole that attracts wildlife 24 hours a day, with an infinity pool above the plains and world-class spa. Singita Grumeti offers the most exclusive private reserve experience (zero other vehicles on 350,000 acres), and Namiri Plains is the best choice for predator specialists — it has the highest cheetah concentration in Tanzania.

Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is positioned right on the crater rim with uninterrupted views directly into the caldera — particularly the suites which have freestanding baths facing the crater. andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is equally spectacular with legendary butler service and pre-dawn private crater descents. Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is built into the crater wall itself and offers excellent value at a lower price point.

Mara Explorer is positioned directly on the Mara River bank — one of the best-located properties for witnessing crossings between July and October. Nomad Serengeti Under Canvas moves seasonally to follow the migration and puts guests exactly where the action is. For maximum exclusivity, Singita Grumeti offers private access to the Grumeti River crossing in May–June. Book northern Serengeti lodges at least 10–12 months in advance for peak season.

Tanzania's best mid-range lodges include Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (66 rooms on a kopje, large pool, reliable and well-run), Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge (built into the crater wall with dramatic views), Kirurumu Manyara Lodge (spectacular rift valley escarpment position, 600m above the park), and Tarangire Safari Lodge (panoramic river valley views with elephant watching potential). All offer full-board, game drives, and genuine safari experience without luxury pricing.

For a bush and beach combination, Essque Zalu Zanzibar (40 pool villas at Nungwi, all-tide swimming) and Zuri Zanzibar (boutique Swahili village design at Kendwa) are the top north coast choices. For diving, Matemwe Lodge by andBeyond is best positioned above the Mnemba Marine Reserve. For Stone Town culture, Zanzibar Serena Inn is unmatched — two restored 19th-century buildings with rooftop dhow harbour views. All are 45 minutes by charter from any Serengeti airstrip.

The Serengeti is excellent year-round, but different months deliver different highlights. January–March: calving season in the southern Serengeti — 500,000 wildebeest calves born, intense predator action (cheetah, lion, wild dog). June–July: migration moves north through the western corridor, Grumeti River crossings. July–October: peak season for Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti — the most dramatic wildlife spectacle on Earth. November–December: quieter, greener, lower prices as herds move south again.

Most mid-range and luxury safari lodges in Tanzania operate on a full-board basis — all meals and often game drives are included in the nightly rate. Some luxury camps are fully all-inclusive (drinks, laundry, all activities). National park entry fees are sometimes included within lodge rates and sometimes charged separately. When Tanzania Bespoke Expeditions builds your itinerary, we include all park fees, game drives, full board, and a private vehicle in every package price — there are no hidden additions at the gate.

A safari lodge is a permanent structure — stone, wood, or thatch — with en-suite rooms, a restaurant, bar, and usually a pool. A permanent tented camp uses fixed canvas tents on raised platforms with proper beds, en-suite bathrooms, and flush toilets — more atmospheric and closer to nature. A mobile or seasonal camp packs up and follows the migration, offering the most immersive bush experience of all. All three styles can be mid-range or luxury — the canvas walls don't mean compromising on comfort. None of the properties featured on this page are budget or shared-vehicle operations.
