Overview

Tanzania's Most Beautiful
Natural Secret

"You swim through crystal-clear water in 30-degree warmth while a jungle canopy filters the light into shafts of green and gold above you. It is, quite simply, paradise."

Chemka Hot Springs — also known as Kikuletwa Hot Springs — are one of Tanzania's most genuinely magical and relatively undiscovered natural destinations. Located near the small town of Boma Ng'ombe in the Kilimanjaro Region, just over an hour from Moshi, the springs are a series of natural thermal pools fed by geothermal water that percolates up through the volcanic rock of the Kilimanjaro massif, emerging at a constant and perfectly comfortable 30–35°C year-round.

What makes Chemka extraordinary is not just the warmth of the water, but its extraordinary clarity. The springs are a vivid, translucent turquoise — you can see every pebble on the bottom from four metres above — and they are framed by a dense canopy of fig and palm trees whose roots reach into the water's edge, creating a jungle amphitheatre of extraordinary natural beauty. A wooden rope swing hangs over the main pool. Fish dart through the shallows. The air smells of vegetation and warm stone.

For Tanzania Bespoke Expeditions clients, Chemka is the perfect half-day addition to any Kilimanjaro-area itinerary — a genuinely different experience that provides complete rest and sensory pleasure in contrast to the physical demands of trekking or the mental intensity of a cultural encounter. We pair it most often with Materuni Waterfall into a single outstanding full-day excursion from Moshi.

Expert Insight

Chemka is best experienced on a weekday — local visitors fill the springs on Sundays and it can lose its tranquil character. We always schedule weekday visits for our clients and arrive before 10am when the water is clearest, the jungle is cooler, and you have the best chance of having the main pool largely to yourselves. A picnic lunch beneath the fig trees rounds out one of the most relaxing half-days in all of Tanzania.

Meets Jungle

The Most Beautiful
Pool in East Africa

Chemka Hot Springs sit in a natural depression in the semi-arid plains south of Kilimanjaro — an oasis of improbable lushness in a landscape of dry scrub. The geothermal water that feeds the springs rises from deep underground, heated by residual volcanic activity from the Kilimanjaro massif, and emerges into the pool at a temperature that makes it instantly, effortlessly comfortable to swim in at any time of year.

The clarity of the water is its most striking quality — maintained by the constant upwelling of fresh geothermal water and the natural filtration of the volcanic rock through which it passes. Visibility in the main pool reaches to the bottom in over four metres of water. Small fish move through the shallows. The canopy above closes the sky to a patchwork of shifting light and green.

A rope swing suspended from an overhanging fig tree over the deepest part of the main pool has become Chemka's most photographed feature — and a genuine expression of joy that connects every visitor to the child-like pleasure of leaping into perfect water in a perfect place.

Why the Water Is So Clear

The extraordinary clarity of Chemka's water comes from its geothermal source — the water rises through layers of volcanic rock that act as a natural filter, removing almost all suspended particles before the water reaches the surface. The constant upwelling also prevents the stagnation that clouds most natural pools. The result is visibility that rivals the clearest Caribbean sea: a turquoise that appears almost artificially vivid against the dark green of the canopy above.

Experiences

What to Do at
Chemka Hot Springs

Swimming & Floating

The primary reason to visit — simply swimming in the crystal-clear, warm water beneath the jungle canopy. The main pool is deep enough to dive into, warm enough to stay in for hours, and beautiful enough that most visitors simply float on their backs, staring up at the light filtering through the fig tree canopy above.

Rope Swing

The famous rope swing suspended from an overhanging fig branch over the main pool is an institution at Chemka — a simple pleasure that genuinely delights visitors of all ages. The arc carries you out over the deepest part of the pool before releasing into the warm, clear water below. It never gets old.

Photography

Chemka is an extraordinarily photogenic location — the turquoise water, the rope swing silhouetted against the canopy, the shafts of light filtering through fig leaves, the fish darting through the shallows. Early morning visits deliver the best light. Underwater photography with a waterproof camera reveals a remarkably clear aquatic world.

Picnic in the Jungle

The shaded grove around the springs is a wonderful setting for a relaxed picnic lunch — we arrange a full luxury picnic for all our clients visiting Chemka, including fresh local fruit, Tanzanian specialities, and cold drinks. Eating beside the springs after a morning swim is one of the most unhurried and pleasurable experiences in any Tanzania itinerary.

Fish Watching

The clear water of Chemka supports a healthy population of tilapia and other freshwater fish that move through the shallows with complete indifference to swimmers. Observing them — and occasionally having them nibble curiously at your feet — is a gentle, fascinating addition to the swimming experience.

Nature Walk

The area around the springs supports a variety of birdlife and interesting vegetation — a short guided walk through the surrounding bush before or after swimming reveals the contrast between the lush oasis of the springs and the semi-arid landscape that surrounds it. Sunbirds, kingfishers, and weavers are commonly seen.

The Perfect Pairing

Combine with Materuni
for a Perfect Full Day

Chemka Hot Springs and Materuni Waterfall are perfectly paired into a single unforgettable full-day excursion from Moshi — and this combination is one of our most popular single-day experiences in the entire northern Tanzania itinerary. The contrast between the two is what makes the day so satisfying: Materuni takes you up onto the forested, coffee-growing slopes of Kilimanjaro to a stunning 70-metre waterfall; Chemka brings you back down to the warm plains for a long, lazy afternoon in the most beautiful natural pool in East Africa.

We always sequence the day as Materuni in the morning, Chemka in the afternoon — arriving at Materuni at 8am when the forest is cool and the waterfall mist is at its most dramatic, then driving the hour to Chemka for a warm swim and picnic lunch from around noon. The combination of waterfall hiking and thermal swimming, bracketed by a scenic drive through the Kilimanjaro foothills, creates a day of extraordinary sensory variety and satisfaction.

Whether you are beginning a northern circuit safari, recovering after a Kilimanjaro climb, or spending a relaxed day between activities, the springs fit naturally into almost any Tanzania itinerary.

When to Visit

Best Time to Visit
Chemka Hot Springs

Unlike most Tanzania destinations, Chemka Hot Springs are genuinely excellent year-round — the water temperature is constant at 30–35°C regardless of season, and the springs never close. The only meaningful variation between seasons is the surrounding landscape and the volume of local visitors on weekends.

Good — Can Be Busier After Rains

Dry Season (Jun – Oct & Jan – Feb)

The dry season brings clear skies and slightly lower ambient temperatures that make the warm springs even more refreshing. The surrounding landscape is golden and dry, making the oasis of the springs even more dramatic by contrast. Road access is easy and reliable. This is the most popular period for combining Chemka with a Kilimanjaro climb.

Green Season (Mar – May, Nov)

The rains bring lush green vegetation around the springs — the jungle canopy is at its most verdant and the birdlife most active. The springs themselves are unaffected by rainfall; the water remains clear and warm regardless. Road access may require 4WD in April–May but is generally fine with a capable vehicle.

Weekday vs Weekend

The single most important timing advice for Chemka: visit on a weekday. The springs are a popular weekend destination for local Tanzanian families and Moshi residents — Sunday in particular can be very busy and the peaceful atmosphere that makes Chemka special disappears entirely. All our visits are scheduled Monday–Saturday, and we always aim to arrive before 10am regardless of day.

Morning vs Afternoon

Morning visits (before noon) have the clearest water, the best light filtering through the canopy, and the fewest visitors. The springs also feel warmer in the morning when the air is cool — the contrast between the warm water and the fresh morning air is one of the most pleasant sensory experiences of the visit. We always include Chemka as an afternoon stop on our Materuni + Chemka day to capture the best of both.

Practical Information

to Know Before You Go

Getting There

Chemka Hot Springs are located near Boma Ng'ombe village, approximately 50km from Moshi and 90km from Arusha — roughly 1.5 hours from Moshi and 2 hours from Arusha by private vehicle. The final 15km of road is unpaved and requires a 4WD, particularly after rain. We arrange all private transfers and always use experienced drivers who know the route well. There is no public transport to the springs.

Entry & Facilities

Entry to Chemka Hot Springs costs approximately $10–20 USD per person (fees are subject to change and are always included in our packages). On-site facilities are basic — changing rooms, simple toilets, and a small snack and drinks kiosk. We always bring a full picnic for our clients rather than relying on the basic on-site food options.

Chemka vs Kikuletwa

Chemka Hot Springs and Kikuletwa Hot Springs are the same place. "Chemka" is the Swahili local name; "Kikuletwa" refers to the nearby river. Both names are used interchangeably across travel sites. When searching or booking, either name will bring you to the same location.

Questions Answered

Chemka Hot Springs (also called Kikuletwa Hot Springs) are natural thermal spring pools near Boma Ng'ombe village in Tanzania's Kilimanjaro Region. The springs are fed by geothermal water that percolates up through the volcanic rock of the Kilimanjaro massif, maintaining a constant comfortable temperature of 30–35°C year-round. They are famous for their extraordinary turquoise clarity, jungle canopy setting, and the famous rope swing over the main pool. They are one of the most beautiful natural swimming sites in East Africa.

Yes — Chemka and Kikuletwa are the same location. "Chemka" is the Swahili local name (from the Swahili word for "boiling" or "bubbling"), while "Kikuletwa" refers to the Kikuletwa River that flows nearby. Both names appear in travel guides, on Google Maps, and in tour operator listings. When searching for or booking either name, you will arrive at the same springs.

The water is warm rather than scalding — a very comfortable 30–35°C, which is warmer than most swimming pools and perfectly pleasant to swim in for extended periods. This temperature remains constant year-round, making the springs equally enjoyable in the coolest months (July–August) when the warm water feels particularly luxurious against the cool morning air, and in the hotter months when they provide a refreshing retreat. They are not dangerously hot in any sense.

Yes — swimming is the primary activity at Chemka and what draws most visitors. The main pool is clean, clear, and up to 4+ metres deep — deep enough to jump or swing from the rope swing. The water is completely safe to swim in. Non-swimmers and children can enjoy the shallower edges of the pool. Bring swimwear, a towel, and a waterproof camera — the clarity of the water makes underwater photography remarkable.

Chemka is excellent year-round. The most important timing advice is to visit on a weekday — Sunday especially can be very crowded with local visitors. Aim to arrive before 10am for the clearest water, best morning light through the canopy, and fewest visitors. The dry season (June–October, January–February) brings the most reliable road access and is the most popular period. The green season is beautiful but the final road can be muddy.

Chemka is approximately 50km from Moshi (about 1.5 hours) and 90km from Arusha (about 2 hours) by private 4WD vehicle. The final 15km is unpaved and a 4WD is recommended, particularly after rain.
