Overview

Kilimanjaro's Most
Rewarding Day Trip

"The forest path winds up through coffee and banana — the mountain invisible above the canopy — until the sound arrives before the sight: a low roar that builds through the trees into something vast and white and cold."

Hidden in the lush montane forest on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro, just 25km from Moshi, Materuni Waterfalls are one of Tanzania's most beautifully situated and genuinely rewarding day experiences. A 70-metre cascade thunders down through mossy volcanic rock into a deep pool at the base — and the approach through the Chagga village of Materuni, through coffee plantations and rainforest alive with birdsong, is as much the point as the waterfall itself.

What distinguishes a Materuni visit from a simple waterfall excursion is its cultural depth. The Chagga people — the indigenous community of Kilimanjaro's slopes — have cultivated coffee, banana, and vegetables on these fertile volcanic soils for centuries, and the village of Materuni sits at the heart of the region that produces Tanzania's finest Kilimanjaro Arabica coffee. A guided walk through the coffee farm, demonstrating the full process from cherry to cup with a traditional roasting over an open fire, is one of the most sensory and educational experiences available in the entire northern Tanzania region.

For Tanzania Bespoke Expeditions clients, Materuni is always paired with Chemka Hot Springs in the afternoon — creating a perfect full-day Kilimanjaro-area excursion that combines cultural forest immersion in the morning with warm thermal swimming in the afternoon. It is consistently one of the most positively reviewed single days in any of our northern Tanzania itineraries.

Expert Insight

The combination of Materuni and Chemka in a single day is something we are very proud of — it is the kind of perfectly sequenced day that feels completely effortless but takes real local knowledge to get right. We depart Moshi at 7:30am, reach Materuni village by 8:30am when the forest is cool and misty, complete the hike and coffee tour by 1pm, then drive to Chemka for a warm afternoon swim. Return to Moshi by 5pm. It is, without exaggeration, one of the finest single days available in northern Tanzania for those not climbing a mountain.

The Waterfall

Seventy Metres of
Kilimanjaro's Water

Where Kilimanjaro's
Snowmelt Meets the Forest

The Materuni Waterfall is fed by the Materuni River — a stream that originates from the snowfields and springs of Kilimanjaro's upper slopes and gathers volume through the montane forest as it descends. By the time it reaches the 70-metre drop that creates the waterfall, it has become a powerful, ice-cold cascade that fills the deep plunge pool below with mist and a constant low roar audible from several hundred metres up the trail.

The waterfall itself is framed by a wall of lush tropical vegetation — mosses and ferns cling to the volcanic rock face, giant tree ferns overhang the pool, and the forest canopy closes in on three sides creating a natural amphitheatre that concentrates the sound and cool air into something genuinely magnificent. Standing at the base, with the spray on your face and the falls filling your entire field of view, is one of those simple, powerful moments that travel is made for.

The plunge pool at the base is deep enough to swim in — the water is very cold but the experience of swimming directly beneath the cascade is unforgettable for those willing to embrace the temperature.

The Coffee Experience

From Cherry to Cup —
Kilimanjaro's Famous Arabica

The Materuni visit is as much about coffee as it is about the waterfall. The village sits within the heart of Tanzania's most celebrated coffee-growing region — the fertile volcanic slopes of Kilimanjaro have produced outstanding Arabica coffee under the name Kilimanjaro AA for over a century. A guided walk through the coffee farm with a local Chagga farmer demonstrates the entire production process from tree to cup — one of the most hands-on and genuinely enlightening coffee experiences available anywhere in the world.

From Cherry to Cup — The Chagga Coffee Process
🌿 Step 1 Picking Hand-picking only ripe red cherries from the Arabica trees — selective picking by eye ensures quality
💧 Step 2 Pulping Removing the outer fruit flesh from the coffee bean using a wooden hand-pulper — traditional Chagga method
☀️ Step 3 Fermenting & Drying Beans fermented in water then dried on raised beds in the Kilimanjaro sun for 1–2 weeks
🔥 Step 4 Roasting Traditional open-fire roasting in a clay pot over wood embers — the aroma fills the entire farm
Step 5 Grinding & Tasting Hand-pounding in a wooden mortar, then brewing over the fire and drinking fresh with traditional snacks

The coffee tour concludes with a traditional Chagga tasting session — freshly brewed Kilimanjaro coffee alongside mbege (traditional Chagga banana beer, fermented from local bananas and millet), and a selection of local snacks. For coffee lovers, this is as authentic and immersive as it gets — you understand every step that connects the plant to your cup, and the coffee you taste at the end has a story attached to every sip.

About Kilimanjaro Arabica Coffee

Kilimanjaro Arabica coffee — grown at 1,400–2,000m on the volcanic slopes of the mountain — is Tanzania's most prized coffee variety, with a bright acidity, medium body, and characteristic notes of citrus and dark chocolate. The combination of rich volcanic soil, high altitude, consistent rainfall, and the traditional Chagga cultivation methods produce a coffee that competes with Kenya and Ethiopia's finest. Materuni is one of the primary growing villages, and the farmers here have been cultivating coffee for over 100 years.

The Full Day Experience

The Materuni Day —
Hour by Hour

A well-arranged Materuni day follows a natural, unhurried rhythm — beginning in the cool morning forest and ending with a traditional lunch in the village. Here is how the day unfolds when arranged through Tanzania Bespoke Expeditions.

7:30am — Moshi Hotel
Departure in Private 4WD

An early start from Moshi captures the best of the morning forest. The drive to Materuni village takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour — climbing through the Kilimanjaro foothills, past small farmsteads and increasingly lush vegetation, with Kibo emerging above the clouds on clear mornings.

8:30am — Materuni Village
Coffee Farm Walk & Local Breakfast

Arriving at the village, your local Chagga guide welcomes you with a walk through the coffee and banana plantations. The morning air is cool and fragrant — coffee blossoms and wet earth and wood smoke. A light local breakfast of seasonal fruit and tea or coffee is served before the hike begins.

9:30am — Forest Trail
Guided Hike to the Waterfall

The trail descends from the village into the montane forest — a shaded, increasingly wild path of approximately 2km (each way) through giant tree ferns, Podocarpus, and fig trees. The trail is well-maintained but includes some steep and occasionally slippery sections on the final descent to the waterfall base. The guide explains the forest ecology, points out birds, and navigates any tricky sections with ease. The sound of the waterfall grows for the last 10 minutes, building anticipation perfectly.

10:30am — The Falls
Materuni Waterfall — Time to Explore

Approximately 1 hour at the base of the waterfall — time to explore the plunge pool, swim briefly if you're brave enough for the cold water, photograph the cascade from every angle, and simply sit in the cool mist listening to the roar. This is rarely crowded and always feels genuinely private. The return hike ascends back through the forest to the village in approximately 45 minutes.

12:00pm — Back in the Village
Coffee Roasting & Traditional Lunch

Back at the village, the full coffee process demonstration takes place — from cherry-picking through pulping, fermenting, drying, open-fire roasting, hand-grinding, and finally tasting. The aroma of freshly roasted Kilimanjaro coffee over a wood fire is one of those sensory experiences that immediately fixes itself in memory. Lunch follows: a traditional Chagga meal of banana, beans, rice, and local vegetables eaten communally with the farming family.

1:30pm — Onward
Drive to Chemka Hot Springs (Optional)

For clients combining with Chemka — the drive from Materuni village to the springs takes approximately 1 hour, arriving around 2:30pm for a warm afternoon swim and picnic in the jungle. The contrast between the cool mountain forest of the morning and the warm thermal pool of the afternoon is genuinely one of the best single-day experiences we offer in Tanzania.

What's Included

Everything the
Materuni Day Delivers

Guided Forest Hike

A 2km guided walk each way through the montane forest of Kilimanjaro's lower slopes — moss-draped trees, giant ferns, birdsong, and the steady approach to the waterfall through increasingly dense vegetation. Your local Chagga guide explains the forest ecology throughout.

70-Metre Waterfall

Standing at the base of Materuni's 70-metre cascade — spray in your face, the roar filling the forest amphitheatre, the pool cold and clear at your feet. Optional cold swimming in the plunge pool. One of the most satisfying natural spectacles in the Kilimanjaro region.

Full Coffee Farm Tour

A complete demonstration of the Kilimanjaro Arabica coffee process — picking, pulping, fermenting, drying, roasting over an open fire, and hand-grinding, concluding with a tasting of fresh brew alongside traditional Chagga banana beer. The most hands-on coffee experience in Tanzania.

Traditional Chagga Lunch

A communal meal with the farming family — banana (in various preparations: cooked green, ripe, or as banana beer), beans, rice, and local vegetables grown on the slopes around the village. Simple, authentic, and genuinely delicious after a morning in the forest.

Bird Watching

The montane forest of Kilimanjaro's lower slopes is an excellent birding habitat — Hartlaub's turaco, Narina trogon, silvery-cheeked hornbill, African crowned eagle, and various sunbirds and starlings are all possible on the forest trail and in the village plantations.

Chagga Cultural Exchange

Materuni village offers an authentic window into Chagga daily life — one of Tanzania's most historically significant ethnic groups, the indigenous farmers of Kilimanjaro. The visit is unhurried and genuinely mutual — your guide's family welcomes you into their working farm and home.

Best Conditions — Dry Season
Good — Lush, Waterfall at Peak Volume

Dry Season (Jun – Oct, Jan – Feb)

The dry season delivers the most reliable trail conditions — firm underfoot, good visibility in the forest, and excellent morning Kilimanjaro views from the village on clear days. The waterfall remains impressive year-round but is at its most manageable for photography in dry conditions. This is the best period for combining Materuni with Chemka.

Wet Season (Nov – May)

The wet season turns Kilimanjaro's slopes a vivid, almost fluorescent green — the coffee plants flower in November with intensely fragrant white blossoms, and the forest is at its most lush and alive. The waterfall reaches its peak volume after the rains and is truly thunderous. The trail can be slippery in places but is manageable with good footwear and a guide.

Coffee Season

Coffee cherry ripens between October and February — the picking season when the farms are most active and the coffee experience most vivid. Visiting during this window allows you to pick ripe cherries directly from the tree as part of the tour. Outside harvest season, dried beans are used for the demonstration but the roasting and tasting remain equally rewarding.

Morning Always Best

Regardless of season, a morning start is strongly recommended — the forest is cool and birdsong-filled before 10am, the trail is at its least crowded, and the light through the canopy is at its most beautiful. Materuni receives afternoon mist as cloud builds on Kilimanjaro in the afternoon, which can add drama but reduces visibility. Starting by 8am is always our preference.

Practical Information

Everything You Need
Before You Go

Getting There

Materuni village is approximately 25km from Moshi — roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour by private vehicle. The road climbs steadily through the Kilimanjaro foothills, partly paved and partly unpaved, with the final section best navigated in a 4WD. We provide private transfers as part of all Materuni visits. There is no reliable public transport to the village.

The Hike — What to Expect

The trail is approximately 2km each way — rated moderate difficulty. Some sections on the descent to the waterfall base are steep and can be slippery when wet. The hike takes 45 minutes to 1 hour each way at a relaxed pace. Good hiking boots or sturdy trail shoes are essential. The trail is not suitable for young children under 6 or for those with significant mobility limitations.

Cold Water Warning

The waterfall and plunge pool are very cold — fed by Kilimanjaro snowmelt and springs. Swimming is possible but the water temperature will surprise most visitors accustomed to tropical swimming. Most people dip in briefly, stand under the spray, and then warm up on the way back. If you want warm swimming, the Chemka combination in the afternoon is ideal.

What to Bring

  • Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes — essential
  • Light rain jacket — the forest can be damp
  • Swimwear if you want to plunge under the falls
  • Towel (for waterfall plunge or post-hike)
  • Camera — waterfall photography is spectacular
  • Water bottle — 1.5 litres minimum
  • Insect repellent for the forest sections
  • Small daypack for carrying essentials

Combining with Chemka

We always recommend combining Materuni (morning) with Chemka Hot Springs (afternoon) as a single full-day excursion. The drive between the two is approximately 1 hour. Arriving at Chemka around 2:30–3pm gives you 2–3 hours of warm swimming and picnic before the return to Moshi by 5–6pm. It is the ideal format and what we arrange for all our clients visiting the Kilimanjaro area without trekking.

FAQ

Materuni Waterfalls
Questions Answered

Materuni Waterfalls are a 70-metre cascade in the montane forest on Kilimanjaro's lower slopes, near the Chagga village of Materuni approximately 25km from Moshi. They are reached via a scenic 2km guided forest hike and combined with a traditional Chagga coffee farm tour and local lunch as a full-day experience. The waterfall thunders into a cold plunge pool surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, and the approach through the coffee and banana plantations of the village is as memorable as the falls themselves.

The hike is rated moderate difficulty — approximately 2km each way (45 minutes to 1 hour) through forest and farmland with some steep and potentially slippery sections on the final descent to the waterfall base. Most reasonably fit adults complete it without difficulty. Sturdy hiking boots are essential — ordinary trainers are not sufficient when the trail is wet. The hike is not recommended for young children under 6 or those with significant mobility limitations.

The Chagga coffee tour is a guided demonstration of the complete Kilimanjaro Arabica coffee process — from picking ripe red cherries from the farm's Arabica trees, through pulping, fermenting, sun-drying, roasting over an open wood fire, hand-grinding in a wooden mortar, and finally tasting the freshly brewed coffee alongside traditional Chagga banana beer. It is one of the most genuinely hands-on and sensory coffee experiences available anywhere in East Africa, and it connects you directly to the farmers who grow Tanzania's finest coffee.

Yes — there is a natural plunge pool at the base of the waterfall where swimming is possible. Be prepared: the water is very cold (fed by Kilimanjaro snowmelt and springs) and most visitors opt for a brief plunge or stand under the spray rather than an extended swim. For warm swimming, we always combine Materuni with Chemka Hot Springs in the afternoon — the thermal pools at Chemka are the perfect warm counterpoint to the cold waterfall experience.

Materuni is good year-round. The dry season (June–October, January–February) delivers reliable trail conditions and clear Kilimanjaro views from the village. The wet season brings the waterfall to its most thunderous volume and the forest to its most vivid green — especially November when the coffee trees bloom. The coffee cherry picking season runs October–February, when the farm tour is most visually complete. Always start in the morning (arrive by 8–8:30am) for the best light and coolest forest conditions.

Materuni village is approximately 25km from Moshi — roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour by private 4WD vehicle. From Arusha, the drive is approximately 1.5 hours. The road climbs through the Kilimanjaro foothills, partly paved and partly unpaved, with a 4WD recommended for the final section. There is no reliable public transport to the village. We arrange all private transfers as part of every Materuni visit, and always pair the trip with Chemka Hot Springs for the full-day combination.
