Overview

7-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Itinerary Overview

The 7-day Tanzania Big Five safari itinerary gives travellers meaningfully more time than a short safari to experience the Northern Circuit. It includes a full arrival day in Arusha, a dedicated day in Tarangire National Park, two full Serengeti game-drive days, an evening on the Ngorongoro highlands, and a full crater morning on the final safari day.

The core route is straightforward: Arusha → Tarangire → Serengeti → Ngorongoro → Arusha. Each stop plays a specific role. Tarangire opens the safari with elephant herds, baobab landscapes and the Tarangire River. The Serengeti provides the widest wildlife-viewing window on the route — large landscapes, strong predator activity, resident plains species, and seasonal movement patterns linked to the Great Migration. Ngorongoro closes the itinerary with the highest concentration of wildlife in a single enclosed area, including one of the more realistic opportunities in northern Tanzania to look for black rhinoceros.

Because the itinerary is tailor-made, the structure can be adjusted to your travel dates, wildlife priorities, accommodation preference, budget, and arrival or departure arrangements. Where the Great Migration is a priority, we can also adapt the routing around seasonal herd movements. Every part of the safari is planned with your guide so the days stay flexible in the field.

Day by Day

7-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Itinerary

A classic Northern Circuit route with two full Serengeti days and a full crater morning. Exact game-drive routes are set by your guide based on current wildlife movement. Distances shown are approximate and vary with route and gate entry.

Day 1

Arrival in Arusha

Route: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) → Arusha
Approx. 45 min transfer · JRO to Arusha

Arrival day is deliberately unhurried. You will be met at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transferred to your accommodation in Arusha. After an international flight, the rest of the day is for settling in — a chance to rest, adjust to the time zone, and meet your safari guide for a briefing on the days ahead.

Travellers already in Tanzania or staying in Arusha can begin the safari directly from their hotel according to the confirmed itinerary. There is no requirement to arrive on a specific flight — the day is scheduled around your actual arrival details.

What's covered on Day 1

  • Airport pickup at JRO where applicable
  • Private transfer to your Arusha accommodation
  • Rest and time to adjust after international travel
  • Safari briefing with your guide
  • Preparation for the following day's departure
Accommodation: Arusha hotel or lodge according to the selected package.
Meals: Dinner and breakfast (per property). Lunch not included unless specified.
Note: If your flight arrives late in the evening, the safari briefing can take place the following morning.
Day 2

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Route: Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu / selected overnight area
Approx. 120 km · Arusha to Tarangire · plus game-drive driving inside the park

After breakfast, depart Arusha and travel toward Tarangire National Park. The route leaves the city behind quickly, opening into open farmland and then the distinctive dry-country landscapes that define the park. Once inside Tarangire, the first game drive of the safari begins.

Tarangire is known for its elephant populations, its baobab trees and the Tarangire River — an important water source during the dry months. The park also supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and a wide range of antelope and birdlife. It is a genuinely different ecosystem from the Serengeti, which is why it forms such a strong opening to the Northern Circuit.

Wildlife highlights

  • Elephant herds along the Tarangire River
  • Baobab-dotted landscapes
  • Lions, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and antelope where encountered
  • Rich birdlife, including species typical of riverine and open woodland habitats

In the late afternoon, continue toward your selected overnight area — Karatu, the Ngorongoro highlands, or a lodge near Tarangire depending on the confirmed route and accommodation.

Accommodation: Safari lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3

Tarangire to Serengeti National Park

Route: Karatu / Ngorongoro Highlands → Serengeti National Park
Approx. 150–200 km depending on gate · one of the longer transfer days

After breakfast, depart for the Serengeti. The journey passes through the higher-altitude landscapes of the Ngorongoro highlands and the edges of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where applicable. This is a long travel day, but it is also a scenic one — the landscape gradually shifts from farmland and highland forest to the wide-open plains of the Serengeti ecosystem.

After entering Serengeti National Park, begin the first game drive of the Serengeti portion of the safari. Where the timing permits, wildlife viewing begins in the afternoon; if arrival is later in the day, the drive continues briefly before reaching your accommodation.

Wildlife highlights

  • Wildlife viewing as you enter the Serengeti ecosystem
  • Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and resident plains species
  • Predators where conditions allow
  • Wide-angle views across the Serengeti's open country
Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Note: Rest stops, wildlife stops and meal breaks are built into this transfer day so it does not become a pure driving day.
Day 4 · Full-Day Serengeti

Full-Day Serengeti Safari (Day 1)

Route: Serengeti National Park — full-day game viewing
All-day game drive · typically 60–120 km inside the park

Today is dedicated entirely to the Serengeti. Start early to make the most of the cooler hours and the wildlife activity that comes with them. Your guide will choose the day's route based on recent sightings, seasonal conditions and local knowledge.

Morning and afternoon game drives are combined with a packed lunch, allowing more time inside the park and less time spent returning to camp. This first full day is usually used to explore the area around your accommodation, focusing on general wildlife viewing and predator activity.

Wildlife highlights

  • Lions — often found on open plains and around kopjes
  • Leopards — usually in riverine trees where present
  • Cheetahs — where conditions and open terrain allow
  • Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and a range of antelope
  • Hippos where water is present
  • Numerous bird species, including raptors and ground birds
Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Day 5 · Full-Day Serengeti

Full-Day Serengeti Safari (Day 2)

Route: Serengeti National Park — second full day of game viewing
All-day game drive · may cover a different sector of the park

The second full Serengeti day usually covers a different section of the park. Having two days gives the guide more freedom to explore further from camp, follow specific species, or move to an area that has produced strong sightings in recent days. Some travellers use the second day to focus on big cats or on photography at first light.

The day follows the same rhythm as the previous one — early start, morning game drive, picnic lunch, then continued wildlife viewing in the afternoon before returning to camp.

Why two days make a difference

  • More time for predator activity and hunting behaviour
  • Opportunity to explore different sectors of the park
  • Better chances of finding specific species — leopards, cheetahs, and other key targets
  • Greater flexibility for photographers at golden hour
  • Follows seasonal wildlife movement in the ecosystem
  • Less pressure to rush through the park

Wildlife highlights

  • Big cats — lions, leopards and cheetahs where present
  • Wildebeest and zebra moving in response to grazing and water
  • Scenic open plains ideal for photography
  • Seasonal wildlife movements — the best area depends on your travel dates
Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Note: The Great Migration moves through the ecosystem during the year and does not sit in one fixed location. Your guide will advise the most productive areas based on the season and current herd positions.
Day 6

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Route: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area (crater rim or Karatu)
Approx. 150–180 km depending on gate and route

After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, begin the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route passes through the Crater Highlands, with the landscape shifting from open plains back to higher, cooler terrain.

On arrival, continue to your accommodation near or on the Ngorongoro rim depending on the confirmed booking. Where timing and weather allow, the evening view over the crater can be one of the most memorable moments of the trip. The cooler highland environment creates a distinct contrast with the Serengeti plains.

Wildlife highlights

  • Final Serengeti wildlife viewing of the morning
  • Highland scenery of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • Wildlife typical of the transition zone between plains and highlands
Accommodation: Ngorongoro-area lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 7 · Finale

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Route: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha (optional JRO transfer where compatible)
Approx. 200 km · Crater to Arusha · with morning crater descent

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a dedicated morning of game viewing. The crater's enclosed ecosystem hosts a high concentration of wildlife, and the flatter terrain makes it easier to cover more ground in a single morning than most other parks.

Search for lion, buffalo, elephant, hippo, zebra, wildebeest and hyena. The crater is also one of the more realistic locations in northern Tanzania for spotting black rhinoceros — although, as with all wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Wildlife highlights

  • Lions and buffalo on the crater floor
  • Elephants — often older bulls with large tusks
  • Hippos in the crater's freshwater areas
  • Black rhino opportunity where conditions allow
  • Numerous bird species, including flamingos and raptors

A picnic lunch is typically taken inside the crater where applicable, following park regulations. In the afternoon, ascend the crater and return toward Arusha. Drop-off at your hotel or, where the departure schedule is compatible, at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch.
End: Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport where the departure schedule is compatible.
Note: If your international flight departs in the evening, an airport drop-off can usually be arranged. If it departs in the early morning, an additional night in Arusha may be required.

Duration

Why Seven Days Is Ideal for a Tanzania Big Five Safari

Seven days is the sweet spot for a first proper Northern Circuit safari. It gives you enough time to cover the three key parks without rushing, but without extending into a multi-week commitment.

Compared with shorter itineraries (five or six days), the extra day in a seven-day safari is almost always used to add a second full Serengeti game-drive day. That matters more than it sounds. The Serengeti is a large ecosystem, and wildlife is distributed across different areas. A single full day gives you one strong game-drive window. Two full days give you time to explore different sectors, follow specific species, spend longer at sightings that matter, and return to areas the guide believes are productive. For photographers and travellers with specific wildlife priorities, that extra day is often the difference between a good safari and an excellent one.

Five- and six-day safaris are still strong options — they simply work best for travellers with limited time. Shorter safaris are concentrated and fast-paced; a seven-day safari is more relaxed, with better pacing and less pressure on individual game drives.

What the extra day provides

  • Two dedicated Serengeti game-drive days instead of one
  • Better pacing overall, with less rushed transfers
  • More flexibility for photographers and wildlife priorities
  • Coverage of three major Northern Circuit destinations without compromise
  • More chances to follow seasonal wildlife movement
  • A deeper safari experience for travellers who want one
Big Five Focus

What Is the Big Five?

The Big Five are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhinoceros. This route gives strong opportunities to look for each of them across Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Target Species · 01

Lion

Why it is sought after: Lions are the classic flagship species of an African safari and one of the most engaging large predators to observe.

Where it may be encountered: Serengeti is the strongest location on this route, and lions are also present in Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Prides often sit on open plains, around kopjes, or near water sources.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Lions move with prey and conditions — some days are quieter than others.

Target Species · 02

Leopard

Why it is sought after: Leopards are one of the most difficult and rewarding sightings on a safari — solitary, powerful and often seen resting in trees.

Where it may be encountered: Central Serengeti's Seronera area is one of the more reliable locations in northern Tanzania. Tarangire also supports leopards, though they are seen less often there.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Leopards are naturally elusive and often rest out of view.

Target Species · 03

Elephant

Why it is sought after: Elephants are a signature species of Tanzania's northern parks and one of the most engaging animals to watch in family groups.

Where it may be encountered: Tarangire is the standout park for elephants on this route, particularly in the dry months when herds concentrate along the Tarangire River. Elephants are also regularly seen in the Serengeti and, sometimes, in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Sightings are not guaranteed at any single location — herds move with water and vegetation.

Target Species · 04

Buffalo

Why it is sought after: Buffalo are a robust, heavily built species often seen in large herds, and they are one of the more consistently encountered Big Five animals.

Where it may be encountered: Buffalo occur throughout the Northern Circuit and are commonly seen in Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Large herds gather near water, and older solitary bulls are frequently seen close to tracks.

Sightings are not guaranteed at close range — herds can move across long distances in a day.

Target Species · 05

Black Rhinoceros

Why it is sought after: The black rhino is the rarest of the Big Five and one of the most difficult to see anywhere in East Africa. Any sighting is a genuine privilege.

Where it may be encountered: Ngorongoro Crater protects a small resident population and is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species. The crater floor is more open than most habitats, which helps with visibility.

Sightings are not guaranteed. The resident population is small, and rhinos are often at distance when seen.

Wildlife disclaimer: This itinerary is designed to maximise opportunities to encounter the Big Five — not to guarantee them. Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather, current conditions and animal behaviour. Your guide will use local knowledge and daily wildlife movements to plan each game drive as productively as possible.

Other Wildlife

Other Wildlife You May See

Beyond the Big Five, a Tanzania Northern Circuit safari offers a very wide range of species. The list below is a realistic indication of what may be encountered — never a guarantee.

Predators & Larger Mammals

  • Cheetah
  • Hyena
  • Jackal
  • Hippo
  • Warthog
  • Baboons

Herbivores & Antelope

  • Eland
  • Oryx
  • Impala
  • Monkeys where present
  • Other antelope species
Destination Focus

Why Visit Tarangire National Park?

Tarangire is often the opening park on a Northern Circuit safari, and it earns its place. The park is defined by three things: elephants, baobabs and the Tarangire River.

Elephant herds are the park's best-known draw. During the dry months, large numbers of elephants gather along the Tarangire River, which becomes an important water source as the surrounding areas dry out. The park is dotted with ancient baobab trees — large, distinctive trees that define its visual character and make it one of the more photogenic ecosystems on the route.

Wildlife is diverse and different from what you will see in the Serengeti. Tarangire supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, lions and a wide range of predators and antelope. Birdlife is strong, especially in the riverine areas. On a seven-day safari, Tarangire adds ecological variety and gives you a strong first game drive without a long transit from Arusha.

You can read more on our Tarangire National Park page.

Destination Focus

Why Spend Two Full Days in the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is the central experience of this safari, and it is the main reason a seven-day itinerary works better than a shorter one. The park is enormous — the wider ecosystem stretches across thousands of square kilometres — and wildlife is not evenly distributed across it. Some areas are stronger for predators, some for plains species, and some for seasonal herds.

A single full day in the Serengeti is a strong experience. Two full days is a substantially better one, because it lets your guide explore different sectors of the park rather than concentrating on the immediate area around your camp.

What two full days provide

  • Time to explore different areas rather than staying in one zone
  • More chances to find predator activity — lions, leopards, cheetahs
  • More opportunities for wildlife photography, especially at golden hour
  • Room to follow seasonal wildlife movements in the ecosystem
  • Less pressure to rush through the park on a single day
  • Time to return to strong sightings or wait for behaviour to develop

On this itinerary, Day 4 is usually spent around the area closest to your camp, focusing on general wildlife viewing. Day 5 gives you the option to move further out if the guide has information suggesting a better area — such as a recent big cat sighting or a movement of herds.

Explore our Serengeti safaris for more detail.

Destination Focus

Why Visit the Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most distinctive wildlife environments in Africa. Its enclosed nature makes it a genuinely different experience from the open plains of the Serengeti.

Wildlife is concentrated on the crater floor, which makes it easier to see a wide variety of species in a single morning. Lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and a range of antelope are all common. The crater also protects a small resident population of black rhinoceros, and it is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species.

Beyond the wildlife, the crater's high walls and varied habitats create a striking landscape that many travellers remember as one of the visual highlights of their trip. You can read more on our Ngorongoro Crater page.

Route Options

Best for: Travellers who want to experience more landscapes within the Northern Circuit, including additional birdlife and forest ecosystems.

Route availability: Not every route is available for every travel date. The final route depends on travel dates, park conditions, accommodation availability and your priorities. Tell us what matters most when you enquire and we will advise which option suits your trip.

Seasonal Wildlife

Can I See the Great Migration on a 7-Day Safari?

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem during the year. It does not sit in one fixed location, and the best place to see migration activity depends on your travel month.

Seasonal considerations

  • January – March: The southern Serengeti and Ndutu area are usually the focus, linked to the calving season. Predator activity often increases around the herds. Exact conditions depend on that year's rainfall and grazing.
  • April – May: The herds and the rains move together. This is the green season, with fewer visitors in some areas and shifting wildlife movement across the ecosystem.
  • June – July: The herds often move north and west through the Serengeti, following grazing and water. The exact area depends on the season.
  • August – October: The northern Serengeti and the Mara River region can be important for migration activity, including river crossings where conditions allow.
  • November – December: The herds generally begin moving south again as the short rains arrive. Wildlife movement shifts across the ecosystem.

What we cannot guarantee: River crossings depend on water levels, herd movement and timing on the day. Migration locations change from year to year. A safari cannot guarantee that the herds will be in any specific place at a specific time.

Where your travel dates allow, we can adapt the itinerary around seasonal movements to improve the chances of encountering migration activity. If the Great Migration is a priority, let us know when you enquire so we can advise on timing and routing. Read more on our Great Migration safaris page.

Timing by Market

Best Time by Country of Origin

School holiday windows and public holiday periods differ by country. Here is a short guide for our main source markets.

Traveling from the USA

June to August aligns with the US summer school break and dry-season conditions. December to early January suits winter-break family travel. Shoulder months (late May, early November) offer fewer crowds and often better availability.

Traveling from the UK & Ireland

July and August are the peak holiday window but also the busiest period. Late May half-term, October half-term and the Easter break are quieter alternatives with strong wildlife viewing. Christmas and New Year are increasingly popular for safari + Zanzibar.

Traveling from Germany, Austria & Switzerland

July and August suit the long summer break. Autumn half-term (October) offers dry conditions with fewer crowds. February is well suited to travellers chasing the calving season.

Traveling from France, Belgium & the Netherlands

July and August for the summer holidays. April/May and October half-terms are quieter windows. The Netherlands also sees strong interest in the dry-season July–October window.

Traveling from Canada

July and August align with the Canadian summer break. March break can work for calving-season itineraries. Many Canadian travellers prefer the shoulder months for better lodge availability.

Traveling from Australia & New Zealand

Australian school holidays (mid-June to mid-July, and mid-December to late January) align with two different safari seasons. The December–January window is popular for safari + Zanzibar combinations. June–July offers dry-season wildlife viewing with fewer crowds than the European peak.

Traveling from the Middle East

Many travellers prefer June–September to escape summer heat, or the cooler window of December–February. Direct flight options from Doha and Dubai make short safari trips feasible.

Traveling from Southern Africa

Regional travellers often visit during South African school holidays, which overlap with strong dry-season wildlife viewing. Road and air connections via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam are common.

Safari Style

Private vs Shared Tanzania Safari

The two formats are meaningfully different in how the day works. Here is a like-for-like comparison.

Private Safari

  • Private vehicle throughout the itinerary
  • Private guide focused on your priorities
  • More flexibility on timing and route
  • More control over game-drive length and location
  • Better for couples, families and photographers
  • Easier to customise around specific wildlife interests

Shared / Group Safari

  • Shared vehicle with other travellers
  • Lower overall per-person cost
  • Fixed itinerary and timing
  • Social experience with other travellers
  • Suitable for travellers prioritising value
  • Less flexibility on route and pacing
Accommodation

Safari Accommodation Options

Accommodation is available across three general categories. The specific property depends on your travel dates, availability, route and preference.

Category 01

Budget Camping

Basic but comfortable safari accommodation, typically at public or designated campsites with dome tents and mattress or bedroll arrangements. Shared camp facilities depend on the campsite. Where included, a safari chef prepares meals at camp.

Category 02

Mid-Range Lodges & Tented Camps

Permanent tented camps and lodges with comfortable beds, private bathrooms where applicable, hot showers depending on the property, and dining facilities. Electricity arrangements vary — some properties use solar or generator-based power with limited hours.

Category 03

Luxury Lodges & Camps

Premium accommodation with a higher service level, upgraded dining, and premium locations in or near the parks. Many properties offer private decks and views. Additional amenities vary by property. See our Tanzania luxury safaris.

Property selection: We do not publish accommodation names on this page because the specific property depends on your selected travel style, travel dates and availability. Comparable accommodation may be substituted when necessary. The properties confirmed for your itinerary will be listed clearly in your personalised quotation.

On Safari

What Is a Typical Safari Day Like?

A general rhythm for a day on safari. Actual schedules depend on wildlife, weather, park rules and location.

Early Morning

Early start, often before sunrise. Light breakfast or coffee at camp or lodge, then a morning game drive timed to make the most of the cooler hours and active wildlife.

Mid-Morning to Noon

Continued wildlife viewing, then a full breakfast or brunch stop. On some days this is served at camp; on others it may be a bush breakfast where the itinerary allows.

Afternoon

Lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day, or a continued drive with a packed lunch where the itinerary calls for it. As temperatures cool, wildlife becomes active again and the game drive resumes.

Evening

Return to camp or lodge before park closing times. Dinner, overnight, and where appropriate a discussion with your guide about the following day's route and priorities.

Schedules vary according to park regulations, wildlife activity, guest preferences, travel distance and accommodation location. On a private safari, the day can be paced around your priorities.

Practical

How Much Driving Is Involved?

Northern Tanzania safaris involve road travel between parks. This is normal for the region and is one of the honest trade-offs of any Northern Circuit itinerary.

The route is designed to balance transfer time with game-drive time. Some days involve more driving than others — particularly the transfer between Tarangire and the Serengeti (Day 3), and the transfer from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands (Day 6). Days spent fully inside the Serengeti (Days 4 and 5) or on the crater floor (Day 7) involve very little non-game-drive transit.

A private safari gives you more flexibility on transfer days — more rest stops, longer wildlife stops, or a picnic stop at a scenic point. Where the itinerary includes a long transfer day, your guide will pace the day so it does not become a pure driving day.

Approximate day-by-day distances are listed on each itinerary card above. Exact driving times are not published because they depend on road conditions, season, gate openings and the specific accommodation confirmed. We can discuss approximate timings for your specific itinerary on request.

Logistics

Where Does the Safari Start and End?

This 7-day Tanzania safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. Arusha is the safari capital of the Northern Circuit and the natural base for a Tarangire / Serengeti / Ngorongoro route.

Arrival

  • Standard: Arusha — hotel pickup on Day 1.
  • Alternative: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — where arrival times allow, you can be met on arrival and transferred directly to Arusha.
  • Already in Tanzania: Travellers already in Arusha or Moshi can begin the safari directly from their accommodation.

Departure

  • Standard: Arusha — hotel drop-off on Day 7.
  • Airport: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) — where your departure schedule is compatible.
  • Onward: Domestic connections to Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam can be arranged as part of a safari + beach extension.

Airport transfers should be coordinated with your international flight times. Tell us your arrival and departure details when you enquire so we can plan the transfer window accurately.

Getting Here

International Flight Connections to Tanzania

Tanzania is served by Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha, and Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. Most safari arrivals use JRO. Here are the main connection options from our primary markets.

From the USA

There are no nonstop flights from the USA to Tanzania. Common routes connect through Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways). Total travel time is typically 16 to 22 hours depending on connection.

From the UK & Ireland

KLM via Amsterdam is the most common one-stop route from the UK. Alternatives include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Kenya Airways via Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa.

From Germany, Austria & Switzerland

KLM via Amsterdam, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa are all well used from German-speaking Europe. Some seasonal direct charter options exist in peak season.

From France, Belgium & the Netherlands

KLM operates regular connections from Amsterdam with onward links to Kilimanjaro. From France and Belgium, connect through Amsterdam, Paris (via partner airlines), Doha, Dubai or Istanbul.

From Canada

Connect via Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Some travellers route through a US hub first for better flight timing.

From Australia & New Zealand

Most itineraries connect through Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways). Travel time is typically 20 to 28 hours with one or two connections.

From the Middle East

Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai offer the most direct routings. FlyDubai and other regional carriers also serve Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Connections to Kilimanjaro are usually one-stop.

Domestic & Regional Connections

Within Tanzania, domestic flights connect Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and the main safari airstrips (Seronera, Ndutu, Lake Manyara and others). These are useful for safari + Zanzibar combinations.

Extension

Can I Add Zanzibar After the Safari?

Yes. This 7-day Tanzania safari can be extended with a Zanzibar beach stay — a very common combination for travellers who want wildlife followed by a few days on the coast.

A typical structure

  • 7-Day Tanzania Safari — Tarangire · Serengeti · Ngorongoro Crater
  • + 4–5 Zanzibar Nights — beach relaxation, Stone Town, spice experiences and island excursions

The Zanzibar portion can include beach relaxation, exploration of historic Stone Town, spice farm visits, and island excursions such as snorkelling or diving where appropriate. Zanzibar accommodation ranges from boutique beach hotels to larger resorts, depending on preference.

Domestic flight connections between Arusha / Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are available and can be arranged as part of the package. See our Zanzibar holidays and Safari & Zanzibar packages for more detail.

Suitability

Who Is This 7-Day Safari Best For?

The itinerary can be adapted to suit a range of travellers. Suitability depends on the pace you want and the priorities of your group.

Couples

A private format suited to couples looking for a focused wildlife holiday with flexibility on pacing and privacy. The extra Serengeti day is particularly valuable for couples who want a slower rhythm.

Honeymooners

Can be combined with upgraded lodges and a Zanzibar beach extension for a wildlife-and-coast honeymoon. The extra day in the Serengeti adds a sense of depth to the safari portion.

Families

Suitable for families when children are comfortable with long drives and early starts. Suitability depends on the children's ages — tell us and we will advise. Children under a certain age may qualify for reduced park fees at some parks and properties. See our family safaris.

Solo Travellers

Private safaris are available for solo travellers. A single supplement may apply depending on the accommodation — confirmed in your quotation.

Small Groups

Well suited to small groups of friends or extended family travelling together. Group size affects vehicle and accommodation arrangements — tell us your numbers.

Wildlife Photographers

Two full Serengeti days plus a full crater morning provide strong photography windows. The extra Serengeti day is particularly valuable for golden-hour work and for following subjects over time.

First-Time Safari Travelers

Seven days on the Northern Circuit is a strong introduction to Tanzania — three complementary destinations without the pace feeling rushed.

Duration Question

Is a 7-Day Safari Enough?

Yes. Seven days is enough to experience the full Northern Circuit properly without rushing. This itinerary includes:

  • Arrival and briefing time in Arusha
  • A dedicated day in Tarangire National Park
  • Two full Serengeti game-drive days
  • An evening on the Ngorongoro highlands
  • A full crater morning before the return to Arusha

For travellers with additional time, longer safaris add specific value:

  • 8 days — more flexibility, slower pacing, and less pressure on individual transfers
  • 9 days — more Serengeti time, additional parks, or a migration-focused routing
  • 10 days — deeper Northern Circuit coverage, or a full safari + Zanzibar combination

Additional days can also allow a shorter stay in Arusha, a longer stay in the Serengeti, or a more considered transition between parks. If you are undecided, tell us what matters most — wildlife depth, photography, pacing, or beach time — and we will advise.

Comparing Durations

Practical Information

Practical Tanzania Travel Information

Quick answers to the logistics questions that come up when planning a Tanzania safari from abroad.

Visa & Entry

Most visitors require a Tanzania visa. It can usually be obtained as an e-visa before travel or on arrival at major entry points. Rules and fees change — always confirm the current requirement for your nationality before booking flights.

Currency

The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted for safari payments and larger purchases. Smaller denominations (USD 1s, 5s and 10s) are useful for tips. ATMs are available in Arusha and other towns, but not inside the parks.

Language

Swahili and English are the two official languages. English is widely spoken in the tourism sector and by all our guides. Basic Swahili greetings are always well received.

Health

Check current recommendations with a travel clinic for routine vaccinations and, where applicable, yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis. Bring personal medication in original packaging. Consult your doctor for advice specific to your health and travel history.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and is required for most safari bookings. Cover should include medical treatment, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation or interruption.

Time Zone

Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3. There is no daylight saving adjustment during the year.

Electricity & Connectivity

Standard power is 230V / 50Hz with UK-style Type G sockets. A universal adapter is useful. Mobile coverage is reasonable in towns and at many lodges. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and camps, but is slower and less reliable than in cities.

Culture & Etiquette

Dress modestly in towns and villages, especially outside tourist areas. Ask before photographing people. Village and community visits are conducted with local consent. Tipping is customary for guides, drivers and camp staff.

Ethical Safari

Responsible Safari Practices

Wildlife watching should never come at the expense of the wildlife. This is how we operate on every safari we run.

We Do Not Chase Animals

Sightings are observed from a respectful distance, at the animal's pace. If an animal moves away, we do not follow at speed or cut off its path.

We Do Not Off-Road Unnecessarily

Where park rules prohibit driving off designated tracks, we follow them without exception. Off-road driving damages fragile habitats and disturbs wildlife.

We Do Not Feed Wildlife

Not by guides, not by guests, not at any point. Feeding wild animals alters their behaviour and creates long-term problems for the ecosystem.

We Do Not Disturb Predators

Resting lions, hunting cheetahs and nursing leopards are observed quietly and briefly. We do not crowd kills or interfere with a hunt.

We Respect Park Rules

Speed limits, opening and closing times, restricted zones and permit requirements are non-negotiable. Our guides are trained to observe them consistently.

We Work With Local Communities

Where the itinerary includes a village or cultural visit, we work with partners who receive direct benefit. Community engagement is arranged with consent and on local terms.

On Safari

Safari Vehicle & Game Drive Experience

Two elements shape the quality of every game drive more than any other: your guide and your vehicle. Here is what to expect on this itinerary.

Vehicle

4x4 Safari Vehicle

  • Purpose-built 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof where applicable
  • Large windows and elevated viewing position
  • Charging options depend on vehicle — confirmed in your quotation
  • Comfortable seating for the confirmed group size
  • Not shared with unknown travelers on a private safari
Guide

Experienced Safari Guide

  • One dedicated guide throughout the itinerary
  • Handles navigation, park logistics and lodge communication
  • Wildlife interpretation, birding knowledge and safe distances around animals
  • Reads seasonal conditions, tracks and current wildlife movement
  • Works for you — not a fixed group schedule

Why a 4x4 Matters

A 4x4 vehicle is useful for wildlife viewing, photography and rough park roads. The higher driving position improves visibility over grass and bushes, the pop-up roof allows elevated shooting while staying inside, and the vehicle handles the rougher roads of the Northern Circuit reliably. This matters on longer transfer days and on wet-season routes.

Game Drive Experience

On a private safari, the day is paced around your priorities. If a sighting is worth extending, the day can be extended. If a transfer day is running long, the guide can build in a longer stop. Priorities can be discussed in advance and adjusted where realistic — within park rules, opening and closing times, lodge schedules and driving distances.

Photography

Wildlife Photography on a 7-Day Safari

The seven-day itinerary offers strong conditions for wildlife photography, particularly because of the two full Serengeti days. Here are practical notes to help you plan.

Best times for photography

  • Early morning light (roughly the first 90 minutes after sunrise) — soft light, low angle, active wildlife.
  • Late afternoon into golden hour — warm light, good silhouettes, predator activity often resumes.
  • Overcast days — flat, even light that can work well for close-up portraits and detail shots.

Practical considerations

  • Long lens: 200–400mm covers most wildlife situations; a 500mm or longer gives reach for distant predators and rhinos.
  • Dust protection: Dust on safari roads is real. Bring a rain cover or a large plastic bag for your camera between shots.
  • Batteries and memory: Bring spare batteries and more memory than you think you'll need. Charging opportunities vary by vehicle and lodge.
  • Binoculars: Complement long-lens photography by letting you scan quickly without lifting the camera.
  • Support: A bean bag or small clamp can help stabilise a long lens on the vehicle rail; tripods are rarely practical inside a moving safari vehicle.
  • Settings: Keep the shutter speed high enough to freeze movement; adjust ISO as light changes through the day.

If photography is a priority, tell us when you enquire. Where possible, we can align game-drive timing and vehicle positioning around photography windows — particularly at first light and golden hour.

Quick Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the 7-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari itinerary.

Indicative rates start around $300 to $450 per person per day for camping, $550 to $850 per person per day for mid-range, and $950 to $1,500+ per person per day for luxury. Final pricing depends on group size, private vs shared arrangement, accommodation level, travel dates and season, park and Ngorongoro fees, vehicle arrangement and optional extras. We provide a personalised itemised quotation on request.

Seven days is a strong duration for a Northern Circuit safari. It allows arrival and briefing time in Arusha, a first stop in Tarangire, two full Serengeti game-drive days, and a full crater morning before the return to Arusha. Travellers with more time may consider 8 to 10 days to add Serengeti depth, additional parks or a Zanzibar extension.

The core route includes Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater. Depending on travel dates and priorities, Lake Manyara or Ndutu may be added in place of or alongside other stops.

The itinerary is designed to give you strong opportunities to look for lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino across Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Your guide will use current conditions and daily wildlife movements to maximise your chances.

The safari starts and ends in Arusha, Tanzania. Pickup can also be coordinated from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) depending on your arrival time and the confirmed itinerary.

Yes. Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) can be built into Day 1 with an airport transfer to your Arusha accommodation. Whether this is possible depends on your flight arrival time.

Yes. Arusha is the standard start and end point. Airport transfers to and from JRO can be arranged where the schedule allows.

This 7-day itinerary includes two nights in the Serengeti with two full game-drive days. The itinerary can be adjusted depending on your priorities.

The Serengeti is a very large ecosystem and wildlife is distributed across different areas. Two full days allow your guide to explore different sectors, spend more time at sightings, and reduce the pressure to rush through the park. It also helps photographers and travellers with specific wildlife interests.

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem during the year and the best area to see migration activity depends on your travel dates. Sightings and specific locations cannot be guaranteed from a fixed itinerary. Where dates allow, we can adapt the route around seasonal wildlife movements.

There is no single best month — the migration's location changes through the year. January to March is commonly associated with the southern Serengeti and calving grounds. Mid-year months often see movement through the central and western Serengeti. Later in the year, the northern Serengeti and river-crossing season become relevant. Exact timing varies from year to year.

Ndutu can be included where the travel dates and season align with calving activity and where accommodation is available. Park rules and accommodation capacity in the area apply. We will confirm this in your quotation.

The Ngorongoro Crater protects a small resident population of black rhinoceros and is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species. Sightings are never guaranteed — the population is small and rhinos are often at distance.

This itinerary can be arranged as a private safari with your own vehicle and guide. Shared options may be available on request. Private safaris offer greater flexibility on timing, route and priorities.

A private 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof is used for wildlife viewing and photography, subject to the confirmed vehicle arrangement.

Vehicle capacity depends on the confirmed arrangement. Group size is confirmed in your quotation. We do not publish unverified vehicle capacity figures.

Accommodation ranges from budget camping and tented camps to mid-range lodges and luxury safari properties. The specific property depends on travel dates, availability, route and preference. Comparable accommodation may be substituted when necessary.

Yes, camping is available on a budget safari option, subject to campsite availability. Camping arrangements and included amenities are confirmed in your quotation.

Inclusions are confirmed in writing. Typically this covers safari transportation, a 4x4 safari vehicle, a professional guide, accommodation according to the selected package, meals as per the itinerary, national park fees, Ngorongoro conservation fees, game drives, drinking water, and government taxes or applicable levies. The exact list is set out in your quotation.

National park entry fees and Ngorongoro conservation fees applicable to the itinerary are included in your quotation. Any government-announced fee changes are passed through at cost.

Meals are included according to the final itinerary. On most safaris this means full board during the safari days, with breakfast included on arrival and departure days where your accommodation provides it.

Yes. Drinking water is provided during safari. Bringing a reusable water bottle is useful for reducing plastic use.

Pack lightweight neutral clothing, a warm layer for early morning and evening drives, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, a camera, binoculars, a power bank, personal medication and a small day bag.

Yes, families are welcome. Suitability depends on the children's ages and the pace of the itinerary. Children under a certain age may qualify for reduced park fees at some properties — we will confirm applicable child rates in your quotation.

Yes. This is a tailor-made itinerary. Dates, accommodation level, route and priorities can be adjusted depending on availability and your travel dates.

Lake Manyara can be added depending on your route, timing and travel dates. It adds a different landscape and additional birdlife to the Northern Circuit.

Yes. A Zanzibar beach extension of 4 to 5 nights can be added to this itinerary, including a domestic flight connection from the safari to Zanzibar, subject to schedule and availability.

Yes. Extending the itinerary can add more Serengeti time, additional parks, migration-focused routing or a Zanzibar beach extension. Tell us your priorities and we will advise the best structure.

Budget safaris generally use camping or simpler accommodation and focus on time in the parks. Mid-range safaris use comfortable lodges and tented camps with private bathrooms. Luxury safaris use premium lodges and camps in prime locations with higher service levels. The core wildlife experience is similar across all three.

For peak season travel (typically June to October and the Christmas–New Year period), booking several months in advance is advisable because popular lodges and camps fill up. Last-minute bookings can sometimes be accommodated, particularly in the green season or shoulder months.

Tanzania is a well-established safari destination with a mature tourism industry. Millions of travellers visit each year without incident. Standard travel precautions apply — use licensed operators, keep valuables secure in towns, and follow your guide's advice in parks. We will provide specific safety guidance in your pre-travel pack.

Malaria is present in parts of Tanzania, including some safari areas. Most safari travellers use antimalarial prophylaxis as advised by a travel doctor, along with insect repellent and long sleeves in the evenings. Consult your own doctor for advice specific to your health and travel history.

Tipping is customary in Tanzania but always at your discretion. As a general guide, many travellers budget a per-day amount for the safari guide and a separate amount for camp or lodge staff. Tipping guidance is included in your pre-travel pack so you can plan.

We accept bank transfer and card payments in USD, with some currencies handled by arrangement. Payment instructions, currency options and any transaction fees are confirmed in your written quotation.

A deposit is required to confirm your booking, with the balance due before departure. Cancellation terms depend on the confirmed properties and season and are set out clearly in your quotation before you commit. We recommend comprehensive travel insurance covering cancellation.

Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and camps, though speeds and reliability vary and are often slower than in cities. Mobile coverage is reasonable in towns and at many lodges. Many travellers choose to disconnect for the safari and reconnect at the lodge in the evenings.

Yes, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal and other dietary requirements can usually be accommodated with advance notice. Tell us your requirements when you enquire so we can confirm with each property.

On private safaris, solo travellers may be required to pay a single supplement depending on the accommodation. This is confirmed in your quotation. In some camps and lodges, sharing arrangements may reduce or avoid the supplement.

Soft-sided duffel bags are recommended for safari. If your itinerary includes any regional flights, luggage allowances may be more restrictive than international flights — typically 15 kg per person on light aircraft. We will confirm applicable limits for your specific itinerary.

Most Tanzanian parks and lodges welcome children, though some properties and activities have minimum age requirements. Family-friendly camps and lodges are available, and we can advise on the most suitable arrangement based on your children's ages.

Yes, Kilimanjaro climbs can be arranged before or after the safari as a separate itinerary. Talk to us about timings if you are planning to combine both.

If your international flight is delayed, contact us as soon as possible so we can adjust your Day 1 arrangements. We monitor arrivals at Kilimanjaro International Airport and can typically adapt the transfer or first-day plan where timing allows.
