Overview

6-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Overview

This six-day Tanzania Big Five safari combines three major destinations on the Northern Safari Circuit — Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater — into one concentrated itinerary. It is designed for travellers who want a serious wildlife experience without extending into a longer multi-week holiday.

Tarangire provides the opening: elephant herds, baobab landscapes and river habitats. The Serengeti brings the widest wildlife viewing of the route, with full-day game drives focused on lions, leopards, cheetahs and the resident plains species. Ngorongoro Crater closes the safari with a compact, wildlife-rich environment where travellers have the best realistic opportunity to see black rhinoceros in northern Tanzania.

Along the way the route offers excellent opportunities to look for the Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhino — along with cheetah, giraffe, zebra, hippo and a wide range of antelope. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and the itinerary is designed to maximise the chances of seeing them rather than to promise specific results. Your guide will use daily wildlife movements, current conditions and local knowledge to plan each game drive.

Day by Day

6-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Itinerary

A classic Northern Circuit route through Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Exact game-drive routes are set by your guide based on current wildlife movement.

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Route: Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu / selected overnight area

Your safari begins in Arusha with pickup from your hotel or another agreed location. Where arrival timing allows, pickup can also be coordinated from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Depart for Tarangire National Park, one of the most distinctive wildlife areas on the Northern Circuit.

After entering the park, begin game viewing among baobab trees, open grassland and the seasonal Tarangire River. Tarangire is particularly known for its elephant populations, which often gather along the river during the dry months.

Wildlife highlights

  • Elephant herds along the Tarangire River
  • Baobab-dotted landscapes
  • Lions, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and antelope where encountered
  • Rich birdlife, including species typical of riverine and open woodland habitats

In the late afternoon, continue toward your selected overnight area around Karatu or the Tarangire region, depending on the confirmed route and accommodation.

Accommodation: Safari lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Lunch, dinner.
Day 2

Karatu to Serengeti National Park

Route: Karatu → Ngorongoro Highlands → Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, depart Karatu and travel toward the Serengeti. The route passes through the Ngorongoro Highlands and the edges of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area where applicable, giving you a first look at the higher-altitude landscapes that define this part of Tanzania.

Continue toward the Serengeti. Entry gate depends on the confirmed route and travel dates. Once inside the park, begin afternoon game viewing in the Serengeti's open plains.

Wildlife highlights

  • Wildlife viewing as you enter the Serengeti ecosystem
  • Giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and resident plains species
  • Predators where conditions allow
  • Wide-angle views across the Serengeti's open country
Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 3

Full-Day Serengeti Game Drive

Route: Serengeti National Park — full-day game viewing

Today is dedicated to the Serengeti. Start early to make the most of the cooler morning hours and the increased wildlife activity that comes with them. Your guide will choose the day's route based on recent sightings, current conditions and local knowledge.

Morning and afternoon game drives are combined with a packed lunch, allowing more time inside the park and reducing the time spent returning to camp.

Wildlife highlights

  • Lions — often found on open plains and around kopjes
  • Leopards — usually in riverine trees where present
  • Cheetahs — where conditions and open terrain allow
  • Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and a range of antelope
  • Numerous bird species, including raptors and ground birds
Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Day 4

Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Route: Serengeti National Park — second full day of game viewing

The second full day in the Serengeti allows you to explore a different section of the park. Depending on the season and the location of the herds, this may involve a different area from yesterday, offering a fresh set of landscapes and wildlife opportunities.

The day is designed around the same rhythm as the previous one — early start, morning game drive, picnic lunch, then continued wildlife viewing in the afternoon.

Wildlife highlights

  • Big cats — lions, leopards and cheetahs where present
  • Wildebeest and zebra moving in response to grazing and water
  • Scenic open plains ideal for photography
  • Seasonal wildlife movements — the best area depends on your travel dates

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem during the year and does not sit in a single fixed location. Your guide will advise the most productive areas to explore based on the season and current herd positions.

Accommodation: Serengeti lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner.
Day 5

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Route: Serengeti National Park → Ngorongoro Conservation Area (crater rim or nearby)

After a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, begin the journey toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The route passes through the Crater Highlands, with the landscape shifting from open plains to higher, cooler terrain.

On arrival, continue to your accommodation near or on the Ngorongoro rim depending on the confirmed booking. The altitude and scenery create a distinct contrast with the Serengeti.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro-area lodge or tented camp according to the selected package.
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Day 6

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha

Route: Ngorongoro Crater → Arusha (optional JRO transfer where compatible)

After an early breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a dedicated morning of game viewing. The crater's enclosed ecosystem hosts a high concentration of wildlife, and the flatter terrain makes it easier to cover more ground in a single morning.

Search for lion, buffalo, elephant, hippo, zebra, wildebeest and hyena. The crater is also one of the more realistic locations in northern Tanzania for spotting black rhinoceros — although, as with all wildlife, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

Wildlife highlights

  • Lions and buffalo on the crater floor
  • Elephants — often older bulls with large tusks
  • Hippos in the crater's freshwater areas
  • Black rhino opportunity where conditions allow
  • Numerous bird species, including flamingos and raptors

A picnic lunch is typically taken inside the crater where applicable, following park regulations. In the afternoon, ascend the crater and return toward Arusha. Drop-off at your hotel or, where the departure schedule is compatible, at Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Meals: Breakfast, packed lunch.
End: Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport where the departure schedule is compatible.

Big Five Focus

What Makes This a Big Five Safari?

The Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and black rhinoceros — are the classic target species for a Tanzania safari. This route is designed to give travellers strong opportunities to look for each of them across three ecosystems.

Target Species · 01

Lion

Why travellers want to see it: Lions are one of the most recognisable safari species and are the primary focus of most Tanzania wildlife safaris.

Where it may be encountered: Lions are widespread in the Serengeti and are also present in Tarangire and Ngorongoro. They are often found on open plains, around kopjes and near water sources where prey gathers.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Lions move with prey and conditions, and some days are quieter than others.

Target Species · 02

Leopard

Why travellers want to see it: Leopards are one of the most sought-after sightings on any African safari — solitary, powerful and often seen resting in trees.

Where it may be encountered: Central Serengeti's Seronera area is one of the more reliable locations for leopards in northern Tanzania. Tarangire also supports leopards, though they are less frequently seen.

Sightings are not guaranteed. Leopards are naturally elusive and often rest out of view.

Target Species · 03

Elephant

Why travellers want to see it: Elephants are a signature species of Tanzania's northern parks and one of the most engaging to watch in large family herds.

Where it may be encountered: Tarangire is especially known for its elephant populations, particularly in the dry season when herds concentrate along the Tarangire River. Elephants are also regularly seen in the Serengeti and, sometimes, in the Ngorongoro Crater.

Sightings are not guaranteed at any single location, as herds move with water and vegetation.

Target Species · 04

Buffalo

Why travellers want to see it: Buffalo are a resilient and heavily built species, often seen in large herds, and are an important part of the Big Five group.

Where it may be encountered: Buffalo occur throughout the northern circuit and are commonly seen in Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. Large herds gather near water, and older solitary bulls are frequently seen close to tracks.

Sightings are not guaranteed at close range — herds can move across long distances in a day.

Target Species · 05

Black Rhinoceros

Why travellers want to see it: The black rhino is the rarest of the Big Five and one of the most difficult to see in East Africa. Any sighting is a genuine privilege.

Where it may be encountered: Ngorongoro Crater protects a small resident population and is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species. The crater floor is also more open than most habitats, which helps with visibility.

Sightings are not guaranteed. The resident population is small, and rhinos are often at distance when seen.

Wildlife disclaimer: This itinerary is designed to maximise opportunities to encounter the Big Five — not to guarantee them. Wildlife sightings depend on season, weather, current conditions and animal behaviour. Your guide will use local knowledge and daily wildlife movements to plan each game drive as productively as possible.

Other Wildlife

Other Wildlife You May See

Beyond the Big Five, a Tanzania Northern Circuit safari offers a very wide range of species. The list below is a realistic indication of what may be encountered — never a guarantee.

Predators & Larger Mammals

  • Cheetah
  • Hyena
  • Jackal
  • Hippo
  • Warthog

Herbivores & Antelope

  • Wildebeest
  • Zebra
  • Giraffe
  • Gazelle (Thomson's and Grant's)
  • Eland
  • Oryx
  • Impala
  • Other antelope species
Destination Focus

Why Visit Tarangire National Park?

Tarangire is often the first stop on a Northern Circuit safari, and for good reason. The park is defined by three things: elephants, baobabs and the Tarangire River.

Elephant herds are the park's best-known draw. During the dry months, large numbers of elephants gather along the Tarangire River, which becomes an important water source as the surrounding areas dry out. The park is also dotted with ancient baobab trees — large, distinctive trees that shape the park's visual character.

Wildlife is diverse and different from what you will see in the Serengeti. Tarangire supports buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a range of predators and antelope. Birdlife is also strong, particularly in the riverine areas. The ecosystem is a genuinely different experience from the open plains further west.

For travellers building a 6-day itinerary, Tarangire adds ecological variety and a strong opening day that is close to Arusha. You can read more on our Tarangire safari page.

Destination Focus

Why Spend Time in the Serengeti?

The Serengeti is the central experience of a Tanzania Big Five safari. It is one of the largest and most ecologically intact savannah ecosystems in the world, and it supports exceptionally high densities of wildlife across large parts of the year.

The plains are home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest, along with hyena, jackal and a wide range of antelope. Predator activity is a particular strength — the Serengeti's open terrain makes it easier than many parks to observe big cat behaviour.

The park also offers some of the best photography in East Africa: open landscapes, strong light and wildlife that is relatively used to vehicles and allows close but respectful viewing.

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem during the year, and the best location depends on the season. Where travel dates allow, the itinerary can be adapted around seasonal wildlife movements. Explore our Serengeti safaris for more detail.

Destination Focus

Why Visit the Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest intact volcanic caldera and one of the most distinctive wildlife environments in Africa. Its enclosed nature makes it a genuinely different experience from the open plains of the Serengeti.

Wildlife is concentrated on the crater floor, which makes it easier to see a wide variety of species in a single day. Lions, buffalo, elephants, hippos, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and a range of antelope are all common. The crater also protects a small resident population of black rhinoceros, and it is one of the more realistic places in northern Tanzania to look for the species.

Beyond the wildlife, the crater's high walls and varied habitats create a striking landscape that many travellers remember as one of the visual highlights of their trip. You can read more on our Ngorongoro Crater page.

Route Options

Which 6-Day Tanzania Safari Route Is Right for You?

Six days can be structured in different ways depending on your season, priorities and travel dates. The final route depends on availability and wildlife movements.

Option 01

Classic Big Five Route

Tarangire · Serengeti · Ngorongoro

Best for: First-time Tanzania safari travellers and travellers focused on the classic Northern Circuit.

Option 02

Migration-Focused Route

Serengeti · Ndutu / Southern Serengeti (seasonally appropriate) · Ngorongoro

Best for: Travellers visiting during the relevant migration or calving period.

Option 03

Northern Circuit Variety

Tarangire · Lake Manyara (where appropriate) · Serengeti · Ngorongoro

Best for: Travellers who want to experience more landscapes within the Northern Circuit.

Route availability: Not every route is available for every travel date. The final route depends on travel dates, accommodation availability and wildlife movements. Tell us your priorities when you enquire and we will advise which option suits your trip.

Planning Question

Is 6 Days Enough for a Tanzania Safari?

Six days is enough for a strong introduction to the Northern Circuit. It gives meaningful time in Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater — with two full game-drive days in the Serengeti and a full crater day on the final morning.

For travellers with more time, longer itineraries add value in specific ways:

  • 7 days — more relaxed pacing, with less time spent in transit between parks
  • 8 days — additional Serengeti time or extra route flexibility depending on season
  • 9–10 days — deeper Northern Circuit coverage or a safari-plus-Zanzibar combination

Additional days can allow more Serengeti time, a slower overall rhythm, migration-focused routing, additional parks (such as Lake Manyara or Arusha National Park), or a Zanzibar beach extension.

Safari Style

Private vs Shared Tanzania Safari

The two formats are meaningfully different in how the day works. Here is a like-for-like comparison.

Private Safari

  • Private vehicle throughout the itinerary
  • Private guide focused on your priorities
  • More flexibility on timing and route
  • More control over game-drive length and location
  • Better for couples, families and photographers
  • Easier to customise around specific wildlife interests

Shared / Group Safari

  • Shared vehicle with other travellers
  • Lower overall per-person cost
  • Fixed itinerary and timing
  • Shared game-drive experience
  • Suitable for travellers prioritising value
  • Less flexibility on route and pacing
Accommodation

Safari Accommodation Options

Accommodation is available across three general categories. The specific property depends on your travel dates, availability, route and preference.

Category 01

Budget Safari

Basic but comfortable safari accommodation, typically in permanent tented camps or simpler lodges. Rooms are clean and functional, and the focus is on time in the parks rather than on property facilities.

Category 02

Mid-Range Safari

Comfortable safari lodges and tented camps with private rooms or tents and en-suite bathrooms. Well suited to travellers who want a comfortable base without moving into premium pricing.

Category 03

Luxury Safari

Higher-end safari lodges and tented camps with upgraded accommodation, service and location. Often closer to prime wildlife areas, with more spacious rooms and additional amenities. See our Tanzania luxury safaris.

Property selection: We do not publish accommodation names on this page because the specific property depends on your selected travel style, travel dates and availability. Comparable accommodation may be substituted when necessary. The properties confirmed for your itinerary will be listed clearly in your personalised quotation.

On Safari

Your Safari Guide & Vehicle

Two elements shape the quality of every game drive more than any other: your guide and your vehicle. Here is what to expect on this itinerary.

Vehicle

Private 4x4 Safari Vehicle

  • Purpose-built 4x4 with pop-up roof for elevated viewing and photography
  • Extended body with generous legroom and a window seat for every passenger
  • Onboard cooler box with drinking water throughout the day
  • Charging ports for cameras, phones and devices
  • Not shared with unknown travelers
  • Vehicle specifications confirmed in your quotation
Guide

Experienced Safari Guide

  • One dedicated guide throughout the six-day itinerary
  • Handles navigation, park logistics and lodge communication
  • Wildlife interpretation, birding knowledge and safe distances around animals
  • Reads seasonal conditions, tracks and current wildlife movement
  • Works for you — not a fixed group schedule
  • Prioritises wildlife welfare over the photograph

How the Guide Shapes the Day

Because the safari is private, your guide works for you. If a sighting is worth extending, the day can be extended. If a transfer day is running long, the guide can build in a longer stop. Priorities can be discussed in advance and adjusted where realistic — within park rules, opening and closing times, lodge schedules and driving distances.

Comfort on Long Drives

Unlimited drinking water, guide books and binoculars on request. Dust protection for camera equipment. Picnic lunches on full-day game drives. The day is paced so that vehicle time never takes over the wildlife time.

Cost

How Much Does a 6-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari Cost?

Pricing for a 6-day Tanzania Big Five safari depends on several variables. We provide a personalised itemised quotation rather than a fixed public price, because the correct cost depends entirely on your trip.

  • Number of travellers in the group
  • Private vs shared safari arrangement

When to Travel

Best Time for a 6-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari

Tanzania offers wildlife viewing throughout the year. There is no single universally best month — the right timing depends on what you want to see. Read more in our when to visit Tanzania guide.

January – February

Green landscapes and calving season in the southern Serengeti / Ndutu area where applicable. Predator activity often increases around the calving herds.

March – May

Green season across the Northern Circuit. Rainfall can be heavier and some roads more challenging, but there are usually fewer visitors and photography conditions are often strong.

June – October

Dry-season conditions, generally strong general wildlife viewing, and the most popular travel window — also the peak of the Northern Hemisphere summer school holiday season.

November – December

Short rains and green landscapes. Wildlife movements shift as the ecosystem transitions. Popular with travellers combining a safari with a Christmas or New Year Zanzibar stay.

Timing by Market

Best Time by Country of Origin

School holiday windows and public holiday periods differ by country. Here is a short guide for our main source markets.

Traveling from the USA

June to August aligns with the US summer school break and dry-season conditions. December to early January suits winter-break family travel. Shoulder months (late May, early November) offer fewer crowds and often better availability.

Traveling from the UK & Ireland

July and August are the peak holiday window but also the busiest period. Late May half-term, October half-term and the Easter break are quieter alternatives with strong wildlife viewing. Christmas and New Year are increasingly popular for safari + Zanzibar.

Traveling from Germany, Austria & Switzerland

July and August suit the long summer break. Autumn half-term (October) offers dry conditions with fewer crowds. February is well suited to travellers chasing the calving season.

Traveling from France, Belgium & the Netherlands

July and August for the summer holidays. April/May and October half-terms are quieter windows. The Netherlands also sees strong interest in the dry-season July–October window.

Traveling from Canada

July and August align with the Canadian summer break. March break can work for calving-season itineraries. Many Canadian travellers prefer the shoulder months for better lodge availability.

Traveling from Australia & New Zealand

Australian school holidays (mid-June to mid-July, and mid-December to late January) align with two different safari seasons. The December–January window is popular for safari + Zanzibar combinations. June–July offers dry-season wildlife viewing with fewer crowds than the European peak.

Traveling from the Middle East

Many travellers prefer June–September to escape summer heat, or the cooler window of December–February. Direct flight options from Doha and Dubai make weekend-plus-safari trips feasible.

Traveling from Southern Africa

Regional travellers often visit during South African school holidays, which overlap with strong dry-season wildlife viewing. Road and air connections via Nairobi or Dar es Salaam are common.

Getting Here

International Flight Connections to Tanzania

Tanzania is served by Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) near Arusha, and Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. Most safari arrivals use JRO. Here are the main connection options from our primary markets.

From the USA

There are no nonstop flights from the USA to Tanzania. Common routes connect through Amsterdam (KLM), Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Istanbul (Turkish Airlines), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways). Total travel time is typically 16 to 22 hours depending on connection.

From the UK & Ireland

KLM via Amsterdam is the most common one-stop route from the UK. Alternatives include Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Kenya Airways via Nairobi, and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa.

From Germany, Austria & Switzerland

KLM via Amsterdam, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, Qatar Airways via Doha and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa are all well used from German-speaking Europe. Some seasonal direct charter options exist in peak season.

From France, Belgium & the Netherlands

KLM operates regular connections from Amsterdam with onward links to Kilimanjaro. From France and Belgium, connect through Amsterdam, Paris (via partner airlines), Doha, Dubai or Istanbul.

From Canada

Connect via Amsterdam, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Addis Ababa or Nairobi. Some travellers route through a US hub first for better flight timing.

From Australia & New Zealand

Most itineraries connect through Doha (Qatar Airways), Dubai (Emirates), Addis Ababa (Ethiopian) or Nairobi (Kenya Airways). Travel time is typically 20 to 28 hours with one or two connections.

From the Middle East

Qatar Airways via Doha and Emirates via Dubai offer the most direct routings. FlyDubai and other regional carriers also serve Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. Connections to Kilimanjaro are usually one-stop.

Domestic & Regional Connections

Within Tanzania, domestic flights connect Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and the main safari airstrips (Seronera, Ndutu, Lake Manyara and others). These are useful for safari + Zanzibar combinations.

Arrival guidance: If you are arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you can normally be met on arrival and transferred directly to your Arusha hotel or to the safari start point. Where arrival timings allow, JRO pickup can be built directly into the itinerary. Tell us your arrival details when you enquire and we will advise the best plan.

Seasonal Wildlife

Can I See the Great Migration on This Safari?

The Great Migration moves through the Serengeti ecosystem during the year. It does not sit in one fixed location, so the best place to see migration activity depends on your travel month.

Broadly:

  • Calving season — the southern Serengeti and Ndutu area are the focus in the early months of the year
  • Central Serengeti — often productive during the middle part of the year as herds move through
  • Western Serengeti — depending on seasonal grazing and water patterns
  • Northern Serengeti and river-crossing season — later in the year, where the herds may cross the Mara River

River crossings specifically cannot be guaranteed. They depend on water levels, herd movement and timing on the day. Where your travel dates allow, we can adjust the itinerary around seasonal movements to improve the chances of encountering migration activity. Read more on our Great Migration safaris page.

On Safari

What Is a Typical Safari Day Like?

A general rhythm for a day on safari. Actual schedules depend on wildlife, weather, park rules and location.

Morning

Early start (often before sunrise). Light breakfast at camp or lodge, then a morning game drive timed to make the most of the cooler hours and active wildlife. Mid-morning stop for a fuller breakfast or brunch where applicable.

Midday

Continued wildlife viewing or return to camp for lunch and rest during the hottest part of the day. Some full-day drives use a packed lunch to stay inside the park.

Afternoon

Afternoon game drive as wildlife becomes active again. Route chosen by your guide based on the day's sightings and conditions.

Evening

Return to camp or lodge. Dinner and overnight. Some camps offer sundowners or evening discussions with your guide about the following day.

Practical

How Much Driving Is Involved?

Northern Tanzania safaris involve road travel between parks. This is normal for the region and is one of the honest trade-offs of a 6-day itinerary.

The route is designed to balance transfer time with game-drive time. Some days involve more driving than others — particularly the transfer between Tarangire and the Serengeti, and the transfer from the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands. Days spent fully inside the Serengeti (Days 3 and 4) or on the crater floor (Day 6) involve very little non-game-drive transit.

Serengeti access can involve substantial travel depending on the route. Where the itinerary includes a long transfer day, your guide will pace the day with rest stops, wildlife stops and meal breaks so the day does not become a pure driving day.

Exact driving times are not published on this page because they depend on road conditions, season, gate openings and the specific accommodation confirmed. We can discuss approximate timings for your specific itinerary on request.

Suitability

Who Is This 6-Day Safari Best For?

The itinerary can be adapted to suit a range of travellers. Suitability depends on the pace you want and the priorities of your group.

Couples

A private format suited to couples looking for a focused wildlife holiday with flexibility on pacing and privacy.

Honeymooners

Can be combined with upgraded lodges and a Zanzibar beach extension for a wildlife-and-coast honeymoon.

Families

Suitable for families when children are comfortable with long drives and early starts. Suitability depends on the children's ages — tell us and we will advise. See our family safaris.

Solo Travellers

Private safaris are available for solo travellers. Single supplements may apply — confirmed in your quotation.

Small Groups

Well suited to small groups of friends or extended family travelling together. Group size affects vehicle and accommodation arrangements.

Wildlife Photographers

Two full Serengeti days plus a full crater morning provide strong photography windows. Pop-up roof vehicles allow elevated shooting while staying inside.

First-Time Safari Travelers

Six days on the Northern Circuit is a strong introduction to Tanzania — three complementary destinations in one trip without committing to a longer itinerary.

Ethical Safari

Responsible Safari Practices

Wildlife watching should never come at the expense of the wildlife. This is how we operate on every safari we run.

We Do Not Chase Animals

Sightings are observed from a respectful distance, at the animal's pace. If an animal moves away, we do not follow at speed or cut off its path.

We Do Not Off-Road Unnecessarily

Where park rules prohibit driving off designated tracks, we follow them without exception. Off-road driving damages fragile habitats and disturbs wildlife.

We Do Not Feed Wildlife

Not by guides, not by guests, not at any point. Feeding wild animals alters their behaviour and creates long-term problems for the ecosystem.

We Do Not Disturb Predators

Resting lions, hunting cheetahs and nursing leopards are observed quietly and briefly. We do not crowd kills or interfere with a hunt.

We Respect Park Rules

We Work With Local Communities

Where the itinerary includes a village or cultural visit, we work with partners who receive direct benefit. Community engagement is arranged with consent and on local terms.

Practical Information

Practical Tanzania Travel Information

Quick answers to the logistics questions that come up when planning a Tanzania safari from abroad.

Visa & Entry

Most visitors require a Tanzania visa. It can usually be obtained as an e-visa before travel or on arrival at major entry points. Rules and fees change — always confirm the current requirement for your nationality before booking flights.

Currency

The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling (TZS). US dollars are widely accepted for safari payments and larger purchases. Smaller denominations (USD 1s, 5s and 10s) are useful for tips. ATMs are available in Arusha and other towns, but not inside the parks.

Language

Swahili and English are the two official languages. English is widely spoken in the tourism sector and by all our guides. Basic Swahili greetings are always well received.

Health

Check current recommendations with a travel clinic for routine vaccinations and, where applicable, yellow fever and malaria prophylaxis. Bring personal medication in original packaging. Consult your doctor for advice specific to your health and travel history.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended and is required for most safari bookings. Cover should include medical treatment, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation or interruption.

Time Zone

Tanzania operates on East Africa Time (EAT), UTC+3. There is no daylight saving adjustment during the year.

Electricity & Connectivity

Standard power is 230V / 50Hz with UK-style Type G sockets. A universal adapter is useful. Mobile coverage is reasonable in towns and at many lodges. Wi-Fi is available at most lodges and camps, but is slower and less reliable than in cities.

Culture & Etiquette

Dress modestly in towns and villages, especially outside tourist areas. Ask before photographing people. Village and community visits are conducted with local consent. Tipping is customary for guides, drivers and camp staff.

Extension

Safari + Zanzibar Extension

This 6-day Tanzania safari can be extended with a Zanzibar beach stay — a very common combination for travellers who want wildlife followed by a few days on the coast.

A typical structure:

  • 6-Day Tanzania Safari — Tarangire · Serengeti · Ngorongoro Crater
  • + 4–5 Zanzibar Nights — beach relaxation, Stone Town, spice experiences and island excursions

The Zanzibar portion can include beach relaxation, exploration of historic Stone Town, spice farm visits, and island excursions such as diving or snorkelling where appropriate. Domestic flight connections between the Serengeti / Arusha and Zanzibar are available and can be arranged as part of the package.

Zanzibar accommodation ranges from boutique beach hotels to larger resorts, depending on preference. See our Zanzibar holidays and Safari & Zanzibar packages for more detail.

Comparing Durations

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the 6-Day Tanzania Big Five Safari.

Six days is enough for a strong introduction to Tanzania's Northern Circuit. It allows meaningful time in Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Travellers with more time may benefit from 7 to 10 days, which allow a more relaxed pace, more Serengeti time or a Zanzibar extension.

Pricing depends on group size, private vs shared safari, accommodation category, travel season, park and Ngorongoro fees, vehicle arrangement and optional activities. We provide a personalised itemised quotation on request — tell us your dates, group size and preferences.

Ndutu can be included where the travel dates and season align with calving activity. Availability of accommodation and park rules in the area apply — we confirm this in your quotation.
