Budget Planning

Financial Transparency & Costs

Safaris in Tanzania are priced per person, per day, which covers your private 4x4 vehicle, expert guide, park entry fees, and accommodations.

Mid-Range Comfort

$400 – $600 USD per person / day

Private 4x4 vehicle, dedicated guide, comfort lodges/permanent tented camps with full amenities.

Luxury Safari

$700 – $1,200+ USD per person / day

Premium boutique lodges, elite locations, fine dining, and maximum privacy.

Fly-In Luxury

$1,500+ USD per person / day

Domestic flights between parks to skip dusty roads, ultra-luxury lodges with private plunge pools.

Note: Children under 17 often receive a 20% discount on tour package prices. Public budget camping ($250–$350/day) exists but is generally not recommended for families with young children.

Travel Requirements

Entry Visas & Travel Rules

Essential documentation requirements for families traveling to Tanzania.

Individual Applications

There is no single "family application". Every traveler — including infants and children — must submit their own separate application.

Passport Requirements

Passports must be valid for at least 6 months past your entry date and contain at least one entirely blank visa page.

Application Method

Use the official Tanzania eVisa Portal at least 10 to 14 days before departure. This allows you to skip long payment queues at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Visa Fees

An Ordinary Tourist Visa costs $50 USD for most nationalities. However, due to bilateral agreements, U.S. citizens must purchase a Multiple-Entry Visa for $100 USD.

Minors Traveling

If children under 18 are traveling with only one parent or a guardian, immigration requires a notarized letter signed by both parents authorizing the travel.

Safety First

Health & Safari Safety

Important health preparations for your family safari.

Malaria Prevention

Tanzania is a malaria-endemic region, and the CDC recommends prophylaxis for all areas below 1,800 meters (which includes most safari parks). Schedule a consultation with a travel clinic 4–6 weeks prior to departure to get age-appropriate pediatric antimalarials (like Malarone).

Physical Protection

Mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn. Dress children in long-sleeved clothing and pants, use 20–30% DEET or Picaridin repellent, and ensure they sleep under the mosquito nets provided by lodges.

Vaccinations

Ensure routine boosters are up-to-date. Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are highly recommended. Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory only if you are entering Tanzania from a country with a risk of Yellow Fever transmission (like Kenya).

Emergency Medical Evacuation

You must purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical evacuation up to $1 million USD. Many premium operators include a basic AMREF Flying Doctors membership, which flies patients from remote bush airstrips to international hospitals in Nairobi or Dar es Salaam if a severe emergency occurs.

Travel Logistics

The "African Massage" — Road Conditions

What to expect when driving between parks in northern Tanzania.

The Reality of Driving

Traveling between parks in northern Tanzania involves long drives on dirt roads that are notoriously bumpy and dusty — locally nicknamed the "African Massage". For example, driving from the Ngorongoro gates to the central Serengeti takes about 4 to 6 hours on rough tracks.

Pacing for Kids

Children under 5 or 6 can find these long, hot car rides distressing. For younger families, it is highly recommended to either book a fly-in safari (using internal bush planes like Coastal Aviation or Regional Air) or limit your itinerary to closer parks like Tarangire and the Ngorongoro Crater.

On Safari

In the Vehicle: Safari Etiquette

Essential rules and tips for a safe and enjoyable family game drive.

Not a Zoo

Animals are wild and unpredictable. Some days will bring thrilling cheetah chases, while other game drives require hours of patient searching.

Strict Rules

Children must remain seated, keep their hands inside the vehicle at all times, and remain completely quiet when close to predators like lions or elephants. Loud screams or sudden movements can startle animals and cause dangerous situations.

Pack the Essentials

Pack a dedicated child-sized pair of binoculars, a camera, an animal journal, and plenty of familiar snacks from home to keep blood sugar stable between camp meals.

Our 8-day family safari was absolutely incredible. Our guide was amazing with our kids (ages 6 and 9) — he made every game drive fun and educational. The lodges were perfect for families with swimming pools and kid-friendly meals. We saw the Big Five and the kids still talk about the baby elephants!

Traveling with three generations (ages 4 to 72) seemed daunting, but Tanzania Bespoke made it effortless. The slow-paced 12-day itinerary gave us plenty of downtime, the Maasai village visit was a highlight for everyone, and Zanzibar was the perfect finale. Highly recommend for multi-generational families.

The 6-day fly-in Serengeti safari was perfect for our family. Skipping the long drive meant more time watching wildlife — we saw lions hunting, a leopard in a tree, and thousands of wildebeest. Our kids loved the swimming pool at the lodge after morning game drives. Exceptional planning and execution.
