Migration Snapshot
Every week our Seronera, Ndutu, and Kogatende spotters radio updates to the Arusha planning desk. Below is the condensed calendar we use to time private departures and group expeditions.
January – March · Ndutu & Southern Serengeti
Calving peaks from late January through February. Base yourself at Ndutu, Kusini, or the Maswa concession for newborn sightings, hyena clans, and lightning-filled skies. Book early—conservation fees are increasing this season.
April – May · Western Corridor Build-Up
The herds drift west as rains taper. Expect lush plains, dramatic skies, and fewer vehicles. We combine central Serengeti with Grumeti river loops or even a fly-in to Rubondo for shoebill spotting.
June – July · Grumeti & Central River Crossings
As waters drop, crossings intensify near Kirawira and Nyasirori. Splitting time between central grasslands and western camps gives you dawn departures in both zones.
August – October · Mara River (Kogatende & Lamai)
Peak drama along the Mara River. We recommend a combination of mobile camps and permanent lodges so you can pivot if a crossing erupts downstream. Charter flights from Arusha cut travel time to 90 minutes.
November – December · Back to the South
Short rains pull the mega herds past Lobo, then toward Ndutu. Pair this with a Tarangire finale for elephants against stormy backdrops.
Planning Advice From Our Desk
- Share two sets of dates: ideal and flexible. We often hold a back-up camp in case weather changes route timing.
- Ask for a dedicated photographic guide if you carry long lenses—positioning near the Mara River is everything.
- Carry layers. Morning wind-chill on open vehicles near the Mara can dip below 10°C even in August.
- Request helicopter aerial time if you want sweeping shots of the migration columns without drones.
Ready to pencil dates? Our operations desk can tentatively block vehicles and camps for 48 hours while you review flights. You can also browse our curated Great Migration safari packages or add a Zanzibar beach finale for a well-rounded itinerary.
