Three Rules We Live By

  1. South to North flow. Start in Tarangire while elephants crowd the Tarangire River, then head toward the crater and finish in the Serengeti where distances between sightings are longer.
  2. Sleep close to tomorrow’s gate. Night two in Karatu shortens the pre-dawn crater descent. Flying from Seronera back to Arusha can reclaim a full day.
  3. Mix habitats. Pair Tarangire woodlands with crater highlands and Serengeti plains to keep each day feeling fresh for first-time travellers.

Sample 7-Day Flow

  • Day 1: Arrive Arusha, safari briefing, gear check.
  • Day 2: Tarangire game drives focusing on baobab valleys and Silale Swamp.
  • Day 3: Morning in Tarangire, transfer to Karatu with coffee plantation stop.
  • Day 4: Early crater descent, picnic on the floor, sunset on the rim.
  • Day 5-6: Serengeti central plains chasing resident predators.
  • Day 7: Optional balloon, flight to Arusha or Zanzibar extension.

When to Add a Ninth Day

Extra nights let you split the Serengeti between central and the seasonal hotspot (Ndutu, Western Corridor, or Kogatende). Families also appreciate a slower day at Gibbs Farm or Chem Chem for biking, Maasai storytelling, and farm-to-table lunches. Review our mid-range northern circuit itineraries for inspiration.

Logistics Cheat Sheet

  • Request a fridge-equipped Land Cruiser for cold drinks on the longer Karatu to Serengeti drive.
  • Secure crater permits at least 30 days out in high season—only 40 vehicles can descend per time slot.
  • Consider a fly-out from Seronera to avoid the 8-hour return drive on Day 7.
